I do put a light coat of sealant between the gasket and the body but nothing between the panel and the gasket. I don’t know what torque I use but I know it’s under 30 lbs... also... I went to ‘flanged’ nuts years ago and have never looked back.

I don't believe 60psi is enough but I'm no hydraulics expert. If you will go to a site on facebook…. Melroe Bobcat Owners of America….. there are a number of very knowledge folks there that have experience with the 600 series bobcats. Good luck.
Each of the four clutches (two on each side) and linings has oil flowing onto them through the hydraulic system. It sounds to me that one (or more) have no oil bathing the clutches so I would check that first by removing the cover and visually confirming that. It is not normal to have any smoke...
Couple of things MTANA….. First… the serial number you gave is for a 1965 M444, if you have a M500 there is a number missing. Second…. that is an 'eccentric' locking collar…. it is locked in the direction of the rotation of the shaft … left side, counter clockwise and right side, clockwise.
Bo…. if you go to a facebook page "Melroe Bobcat Owners of America" and look in their video section, you can search "Removing Variable speed sheave" and you will find a video that walks you through the process….. To answer your question. You need quite a bit of slack in the belt… I drop a 3/4"...
I would need a serial number to verify that in fact you do have a M-610…. if it is…. the 610 came with the VH4D Wisconsin, not the VF4D. There are a number of internal differences for the bobcat VH4D from a baler, concrete saw, etc. VH4D. I would recommend going to the facebook group Melroe...
