So a long story short after my brother got pushed down the interstate in his truck sideways with a bobcat 863 on a trailer jack knifed and broken. I unloaded it off his trailer and proceeded to drive to the interstate taking it to a buddies house that was a couple miles away because my brothers truck no longer had a rear axle underneath it and did not look like it would ever move again. as i was crusing along doing nicely enjoying the horrible weather the east coast was getting it started bogging out i would let off the controls a little to let the engine catch back up it would run fine then all of a sudden it died. i mean just stopped on a dime locked up.engine made no noise smoke leaked nothing. i tried to start it again and it just clicks. I used it all weekend for the first time since i got it up and running after fighting leaks and problems. has anyone else heard of this? my machine only has 2300 hrs and the engine has been replaced at some point with a remanufactured one. I am at a loss I have not even got to use it for more then 20 hours since i bought it.

Did you try boosting it? Could it be something electrical? Bogging possibly due to a lack of power to the fuel pump maybe? Just spit balling.

no i did not started right up on the trailer to unload it and this happened 5 minutes later.I did not relize it had a electric fuel pump i thought it was mechanical.my alternator might of went bad and just drained the battery you might be right i will check thanks

They do not have electric fuel pumps from the factory, if it does, somebody added it.

I have not seen one on it that i know of. is the machine worth putting a new engine in it. I have almost 4000 in it. I bought it on a whim did not really need it just wanted something to mess around with.

it probably doesnt need an engine. deisel engines require no electricity once they are running. so it's either fuel, or air filter blocked or something like that

For $4000 invested, if it is in any kind of shape, I would say it's worth spending some money on. Let's hope it's something simple. But once you are beyond this, the timing belt might be a good place to start. Unless you know exactly when it was last changed, just change it and reset that clock.

Tom is correct in saying that diesels don't need power to run, but the fuel shut off solenoid does. I don't know about the fuel issue thing. Even if it was getting no fuel, the starter should still spin the motor over.

I had a similar problem with my 743. Check the battery first, then the alternator and if they are okay the starter/starter solenoid may be the problem. It may not be as bad as you think.

okay here is a update battery is good starter is good I tried turning the engine over with a breaker bar i could not get it to move at all either way now keep in mind i did all this in a foot of snow on the side of a busy highway. its a 1999 863 and has the turbo deutz in it. I do not know when the timing belt was last changed I literally bought it out of a hole on a farm guy bought the place with the bobcat there i orginaly paid 2800 for it but parts and hydro fluid add up quick. I checked the fuel filter and it was full of fuel. the air filters are new and clean. when i say it stopped i mean like almost through me out of it when it stopped the lap bar saved me. I did just recentley change 11 gallons of hydro fluid in the gear case could that have something to do with it? I checked what i belive to be the belt that drives the hydro pump and what not (might be wrong about what it is) beside the battery on the left side of the engine and it was good. oil looks clean. I cut the oil filter open and there were no shavings or bad looking material in it.I am lost and do not know where to even start taking the engine out of this thing. thanks everyone so far with all the help i really appreciate and so does my sad broken cat

I personally would take the main drive belt off, see of the pump and engine turn over. Work out what one has locked up. If it is the engine, pull the glow plugs or injectors, see if it turns over. Sounds like it may be more than just hydro locked though.

yeah that fact that it stopped on a dime and won't even turn over now does sound like something is locked up..

Uh-oh, this is not sounding cool. I think Tazza is on the right track.
OP, Very interested to see what you find on this one. Any kind of 863 in my area is worth over 10K all day, so you should still have plenty of room to break even. Hopefully its not a catastrophic failure. The deutz doesnt give me the warm fuzzy feeling like the kubota in my 743. Please keep us updated on what you find.

okay another update, so after i got some time to mess with it again after it has set untouched for a coulple days in a couple feet of snow I hit the start button and it cranked just a little like no more then a hair. so i went and got my big boy equipment battery that has a little over 3000 cranking amps and put a new battery in it and hooked them all up together maintaing 12 volt system just more amps. I hit the start switch it turned over realy slow and then all of a sudden cranked fast and started up but poured black smoke but eventually quit. I shut it down put the normal battery back in it and hit the start switch it started right up and sounded great. Then my hf-1 light came on i lifted up my cab and what i would guess is my return line going into the filter is leaking bad now like it burst not from being old but from to much pressure.could my pump of created to much pressure some how and hydro locked it self. also I realize the black smoke could be cause for a stuck injector resulting in a hydro lock situation but the engine would also not turn over backwards after it locked up.

I'm not even sure what to tell you..LOL. Never seen anything instantly hydro lock. Whats your oil look like? over filled? diluted with fuel? Glad to hear it runs though. How did you get it off the side of the road when it died? Your motor has 4 "injector pumps".

timi, ning belt broke or slipped, bent the push rods, if didint deystroy anything jackining around with it easy fix belt kit an 8 push rods, if it was mine and i was doing the work id pull head inspect bores and replace gasket 3hrs for belt 4 for head gasket(in reality more thats just my best time on a head gasket for deutz) as in A, timing whacked or B ,cyls full of oil if b and big boy batt may have bent a connecting rod as well, rare on deutez built beefy, wouldnt toss it yet deutez is like a timex.

When I go back an d actually read the post, yeah it sould like a timing belt. The duetz is an interferance design and valves will hit the psitons is the engine gets out of time.
