U-Joints 632

Hi guys,me again. Just bought this 632 and I'm in love with this new toy.I have read alot of horror stories of u-joints letting go and causing all kinds of damage.My question to all you bob owners,and to all of us newbies before we cause signifficant damage to our machines.Is there anyway that we can access these badboys to check for wiggle or slop before these parts break and put us in the red.Sorry to be a pain,Thanks BoBo.

The only way is to pull the engine and manually check. Pulling the engine isn't THAT hard, but lining it back up can be a pest, you need 2 people for that.

Thanks Tazza, Is there anything special that would be helpful when pulling the engine out....will something fall out that i should be aware of? Is the shaft solid or a slipyoke.Dose it only go back in one way?I know...sooo many questions.Thanks BoBo.

I have never worked on a 632 but i have worked on a 731 and 743 and they are essentially the same, only diesel.
There is nothing that will just fall out, the linkage to the pump will fall down, but its connected to the flywheel and blower. Its not real easy to line back up but with 2 people it can be done. I had one that i removed and worked on the joints and replaced within 2 hours! Everything went just rite. When you go to put the engine back in, put the engine back in but let the stand sit just on the back lip of the chassis, if you let it site rite down it may be too far forward to lift the linkage to line up with the spline on the pump. Hold the linkage while laying down on the pump and get your buddy to slowly bar the engine forward, keep your fingers away from the space between the the coupling and spline, if it jumps forward you can pinch your finger or worse! Hold it from the bottom and just use a finger to feel where it has to go then move it before it gets pushed forward again.
Sometimes the coupling and spline will not quite match up, just get the joint to try and start (there is a taper so it won't just fall) Get a wrench and turn the engine a little till it lines up, then push the engine all the way forward. Thats the hardest part, lining it all up. After that its all easy, it just takes time.
