Ok lesson learned from my 743 rebuild, so now that I know a little about what to look for and to expect here goes. I have a guy selling a 980 with a bad motor for 1000.00. He thinks it is a 1993 but is not sure. I will get the vin to see for sure next week. The guys says the hydraulics are good and the hoses still look good. However if I do end up getting it I will change at the very least any hoses running from the engine compartment to the pump or that are not easy to get to with the motor in. I will not go through what I went through with my 743 again. Anyone familair with these machines? Is 1000.00 worth it? How hard is the motor replacement? If I understood right they have a cummins 4bt motor in it.

The only concern i would have is there are NOT many parts available for that size machine. If you can get them, they will be expensive. For $1,000 its hard to pass up if you can get the engine going or find a runner to drop in.
Its a monster of a machine, but worst case, get it running and move it on to a new owner and the proffits will most probably pay for your 743.
Sorry, i can't give any more info than that, i'm just going by previous posts about "9" series machines that have been posted on here.

The drives were weaker on most large 9's, 970, 974, 975. Of course with a weight of 12,000 they can push rather hard. If the drives go out Ive heard its hard to find replacements. If you found a real 980 though, it has a planetary drive and I havent heard of those failing with use. The 980 and its forestry version 1080 weigh a trailer humbling 15,000 pounds with their heavy duty axles. I was prepping for a 980/1080 with a 20k dual tandem, then ran upon a good deal on a lil' 953 (9000 lbs) and snatched it up. Interestingly about halfway through the 700ish mile trip picking it up the turbo & 2 speed didn't add up. Measuring the wheelbase confirmed it was a 10,000 lb 963. For $1000, a true 980, with good axles, Id grab it up. The big 9 series is quite large though, a good bit bigger in all directions than the smaller 943, 953, 963's. My 963 fits between the fenders (80") on a 14k drop trailer. A 94" wide 980 will have to be hauled on a flat deck with good capacity. If you get tired of it you can sell it to me in a few months! Check it out all over & Good luck! -Scott

He sent me pics and comparing it seems to be an actual 980. He has 2 that he is selling. 1 with that runs as shown in the pics where he is using it and the one that I want that needs the motor. He said the frame haydraulics etc. are better on the machine that needs the motor. To be honest I'm not sure I even have a place I can put that giant sucker but for 1000.00 figure I would play with it and either keep it or resell it depending on what it would be worth once I have it fixed. If anyone can tell me how to post the pics I will put them up.

What a monster Bobcat! If I saw that beast for sale here I would get it! Amazing to see two of them in the same place.

Is that a counterweight on the back? Its kinda well HUGE :)
I have no idea Tazza. I thought it was but who knows. If you guys are drawing a blank on this then I'm going to have to think about fooling with this one long and hard. Look like ship unloaders (don't know the technical term) , Crane puts them on a ship, push material towards the cranes clamshell bucket to offload. I'd look for sloppy pins from a dusty environment. Suprised its not rusty, I'd think being near saltwater would show more. Before the 963 I'd found a good running 980, much like these, hard tires, used a bit, for $5500. Saw a decently fixed up 980 sell for about $10,000. It had nice offroad tires, no leaks, toothed dirt bucket & paint job. Your 980 like a good deal to me from a computer screen. I'd be houndin' ya for info but just got a replacement truck & need to go through it before hauling. Oh, they seem to be worth more for selling purposes with the normal air filled offroad tires. I was looking into having rims made as I couldnt find any with that large bolt pattern and size. I think I could get em for less than $300 a rim. Found proper tires locally for about $150ea, and quite a bit of rubber for the money, 15-19.5's if I remember right. As for value to an individual, if you have room to maneuver: Quite a machine. If space is tight....not so valueable. .......Get em, & fix'em up quick before the 31st and you and a friend can trick-or-treat dressed up as Transformers. Get grapple buckets for them & tear a car apart, great stress relief. -Scott

Hi, I just found this thread and was pretty amazed to see myself driving my bobcat. Yes, these are / were my 980's. I have another that is in better condition than either of the two in the picture. If you are interested, let me know. Thanks, john

those are bumpers on the back so they don't smash the door up against the walls , as stated a barge/ship unloader , along the river at the grain + coal terminals down here it is a popular machine ---------

If not, maybe a mod could delete my attempts, maybe fix one. They are three pics of Johns other 980. I was going to buy it but decided to keep my 963 and attempt a Loegering VTS addition to it. I'd like the extra lifting capacity once in a while of a 980 but with the 963 & tracks, should move the pivot point forward a bit.

I fixed your pictures. To post pictures from photobucket, view the image in photobucket and right click and copy. Then in the post where you want it right click and paste.
