I don't know how much of a problem this is but I want to acquire a skidsteer then leave it out on my 10 acres while I build the house. It is an open area with houses all around. I know some of the newer models have a keypad start that keeps them safe but what about the others? If I get one without a keypad am I certain to have trouble or is there another way to secure it?

install a fake camera somewhere in plain sight, change the ignition switch, install a big ass lock on the back gate, and remove 1 component from the ignition system and park it at your neighbors place. oh and insure it well

Remove the battery or install a hidden disconnect switch.
Pull the relay for the starter.
I don't think that having it stolen would be as much concern to me as vandals. Kids can do a lot of stupid things. I remember being one and we did things I cringe about today. Invest in a small storage building with solar security lights with motion detectors. You can lease those wooden barns on skids and I've seen them with garage doors plenty big enough for a skid steer. I use those lights around here in places just to spook anyone that might be snooping around. Not that I have a problem with people doing that. I only had to take a couple of shots at a trespasser years ago and the word spread that I'm crazy. It was only 000 buckshot and I waited until his truck was broadside instead of straight on thru the windshield. His grandfather wasn't too happy about the holes in his truck but I don't care he was coming down my driveway and doing donuts by my guest house. He did it four times before I stayed up to 3 in the morning to catch him. The cops told his grandfather to prove it was me but if he did they would have to arrest the boy for felony criminal trespassing. But I've completly gotten off the subject of this thread.

haha nice work! i was thinking ONLY 00 buckshot.... yikes! I bet he thinks twice before doing dumb things on others property.

One of the problems is that a generic Bobcat key will fit most anything. I have 5 machines year 2000 and newer, and one key will start all of them. I like the hidden batt cable disconnect, but I think looking for a cheap old portable shed would be the best. Then you could also keep your tools and some building supplies on-site as well. Or maybe build a decent little shed and plan on keeping it once your house is built.

Yea I think the shed idea would work good. But I would still lock up the rear gate and disable somthing.

It didn't take long for the kid to get into other trouble and he served a year in the county jail. After that they must have shipped him back to his parents because I didn't see him around. I guess I should explain where I live I have 72 acres with a lake development that borders my property. The people like this kids grandfather that buy houses there move out here from the city and don't like the farming operations around them. They complain about the dust when the crops come out and the aroma from livestock. They come out here buy their 2 acres on the water get their kids four wheelers and turn them loose on mine and everyone elses property. My field roads connect to other field roads and out to the county roads and they try to use them as short cuts. I have very simple rules about this if I catch them. Adults get a visit from the county sherriff. Children have to leave what ever they're driving here and walk home to get the parents. And I tell the parents that they don't want me to come up there and drive my 4WD truck though their yard so don't let your kids on my property. These things have not made me very popular with the lake people but my other rural neighbors love me. Well enough of my ranting.

Oldmachinist, I agree with you. It is your place and I would handle the problems the way you are handling them. I have 320 acres that I do a lot of work on so I can hunt so I am not too kind when i find a trespasser. I have my land posted so there is no excuse for someone to be on it, uninvited. On my 10 acres someone drove in yesterday while it was raining and rutted up the driveway real good. I am going to put up a chain and some no trespassing signs today. I would like to catch them driving out. I would do more than just talk ugly to them. I think the shed idea is a good one. I am going to look into that. I always get good advice on this site. Thanks to all...

I totally agree with you, its your land they should stay away!
With the location and people complaining, thats not a new thing at all. The local gun club I'm a member of, they have been there for 50+ years. Over the road they built a housing estate a few years back, guess who complains about the noise??? The shooting range was there before the estate, what rite do they have to complain? they KNEW it was there.
With your neighbour, they want to live in the country, if all the land around them isn't concrete you will get dust, no matter what. Some people just don't have a clue....

Get a shipping container. After driving the loader in, stick a ball bearing in the fuel line before the lift pump. That loader is going nowhere.

Yes a shipping cantainer is another good option. I've seen them around for $1500 delivered.

A hidden fuel shut off valve on the fuel pickup hose that could even be electrical , a hidden electrical disconnect switch and such will slow them down , if they know what they are doing and really want it they will get it , Lojack it and hope the best , the ignition switch can be rekeyed as the rental houses around here do it them selves , the mechanic showed me the kit the locksmith put together for them and they change the pins to another accept another key , I seen a few machines with a Club device that locks thru the cage and graps the steering levers , a steel plate over the front access with locks under steel boxes where they can't hit or cut the lock
