Hello Everyone, My name is Dennis Smith and I just bought me a Ford cl30 skiddsteer and the fellow I got it from said it ran good but needed the carb cleaned out because it would start but wouldn't stay running. Long story short, I have rebuilt the carb and it needed it ,was hummed up bad. He also had framed the hydro flud because they had put the wrong stuff in it to start with. So I have the correct 5 gal can of 30 wt oil to use in the hydro system.now I need help on where the drain plug is for the hydro system to make sure its in before I add the flud, and also where do I add the hydro flud and does.it take 5 gallons ? He said.it ran good before.it sat for a year and I have changed the oil and rebuilt carb and need to add hydro flud but I want to make sure I do everything in the order I need to before I try to start it up. The fellow I got of from is in very bad health and has been in the hospital so besides me checking on him and his family on he's health and well being I wouldn't feel right bothering him with it so I am seeking help from you good people and any and all help you have to offer me I would greatly appreciate . My email is [email protected] Thanks and God Bless , Dennis smith

I doubt there will be a drain plug.
The way i flush a system is to pump the oil out the aux hydraulic couplers into a drum. Keep the machine at idle and stop when it starts to spit. Refill the hydraulic tank, drive the machine around, lift and tilt to get the oil moving, drum the oil again till you feel it is about right. Re-fill, install a new hydraulic filter and you should be about right to go.
Sorry, no idea on where to add fluid or check it's level on this machine.

Thank you for the information. I seen on the site that one member was completely restoring a ford cl30 and wanted to make sure that it would be ok to ask his advice on the steps I should take before trying to start mine up. I have been keeping track of his progress and he knows the ford.cl30 very well. Again thank you for your help and please keep any advise you have on mine coming ,I need all the help I van get. Lol thanks again

Howdy DD, I've been off on other projects for awhile and haven't paid attention to this forum. Anyways, your CL 30 may or may not have a drain plug on the main oil tank. If not, just use a siphon hose to drain the oil. The only way to purge the entire system is to drain the tank, fill it with the proper oil, operate machine, and drain the tank again. Do this about three time to be reasonably sure of getting fresh oil in the system. This is the very reason it's extremely important to always use the proper oil, every time, and keep moisture out of the system. You have an older but mainly bulletproof machine. You don't have to bother with Mickey Mouse computer systems, and idiot switches, solenoids, and various lockouts. All this machine requires is a bit of common sense, crank it up, and "Git Er Done"!!! I should be able to crank my engine next week and work it in a bit before I reinstall it in the frame. Most of my painting is done and I only need to finish welding a couple of bushings in place and make some pins. Since I'm building one machine out of two running machines, I'll have some parts left over for sale. Contact me if you need any info or moral support. Don Shilling

Hey Don, thanks.for the information. Also do you know how much hydro I should.add,.system is drained now.and I have 5 gal of the 30.wt that ford said I need to use in it. But from.what I.have learned on here I do need hydro flud in.it before I try to start it up. Also any guidelines you can give me on starting it up would be great. I don't know.anything about it so.all information is.welcomed. guess I need to save up and.buy me.a.book for.it lol Thanks.again and God.Bless everyone. Dennis D smith or DD

Dennis, the book calls for 14 gallons of 10W30 motor oil. It also says NOT to use hydraulic fluid. I wish someone would say WHY not to use it. That motor oil starts getting pricey after 5 gallons!! There are several service manuals available on Ebay. Search under Ford CL 30.

Starting up is no big deal, just turn the key on and crank. One thing I would strongly suggest is to jack the machine up at a point between the tires and then use a 2X4 to try to lift the tires checking for loose axle bearings. It's better to catch them now rather than get somewhere you can't drive back from.

Hello everyone, just checking on one last thing before I start up my cl30, would it be ok to use 10w 30 used motor oil in it for the hydro system the first start up ? I have used but clean oil and thought if there was any leaks in the lines that I wouldn't loose the new high dollar oil I have . And just to make sure , ha ha I know.its a.dumb question but hydro oil goes into the big black tank behind the driver seat ,correct ? And it has two gas tanks one on easch side on the back ,correct ? Just making sure , and is there a neutral on the loader or do I just gas up and turn key and will be ok ? Thanks.for.your help ,I need a bunch and a prayer would.be welcome also . Thanks again , almost ready to try it out ,

What was it used in?
If it's used oil drained from an engine, I wouldn't do it. It will be loaded with all kinds of crap that the detergents have picked up and it will be a PITA to get it all purged out a agian.
Where do you live that oil is so expensive? I use the generic Walmart stuff in mine, $45 for 5 gallons. Seems cheap to me.
Regards,

Hey DD, don't use dirty oil. Hydraulic systems MUST have CLEAN oil due to the very tight tolerances of the valves and pumps and motors. Yup, the big tank in the back is for hyd fluid and the two 5 gal tanks at the rear sides are for go juice. They drain into each other so you have to refill both sides. The only NEUTRAL for the machine is center position of the travel levers which are spring loaded to center position. $45.00 X 3 is 135.00 for a hydraulic oil change. I can't afford to spend that too often.

15 gallons of oil??? Who designed your machine - OPEC??? LoL
Still, $135 doesn't go too far when you start replacing pumps and motors.
Cheers,
SR

That's what I thought as well. But I was told that the Ford CL30 uses 10w30 oil for the hydro system and Ford co. Said never to use any other kind because regular hydro fluid would be.to thin. And I thatnk it takes 15 gal of it to completely change the hydro system. Just don't know if all the old fluid is all out of it at this time and trying to figure that one out as well lol I will get it going one day I hope ,thanks for.the input and any info is welcomed.

Sorry, no idea on where to add fluid or check it's level on this machine.
