Hi guys, I changed my hydraulic filter the other day and found metal in the oil, the 1999 LX885 has about 1500 hrs on it, it putz around with it, rarely off idle, I use it mostly as a fork lift, in a personal setting, not a business, so Im the only one at the "wheel". It doesnt get the snot run out of it, is what I trying to say, I dont know how hard it was run prior to my purchase, probably hard.....
Anyhow, I caught the oil that spilled out of the old filter as it came off, it goes into the funnel on the machine, and down a spill pipe, I put a clean oil drain pan under it and, afterwards, I examined the oil, it has flakes from maybe .0001 of a inch and smaller, mostly light metallic debris, pretty hard to see. Is that normal to see ? I bought the machine with 1300 hours and the seller indicated he had changed the oil and filter once, but it had on OE filter on it so, I dont know, it may have come with the machine ???
I didnt change the oil, I just changed the filter, because Ive had it (the filter) sitting there for better part of a year, and never got around to changing the hydraulic fluid, and just decided it would probably better to change the filter and not the oil, than do neither, now Im going to get another filter and some oil and change it all out.
Was just wondering if you always see some metal when you change this filter. I still have the filter, should I cut it open and see what the it looks like ? Any thougths or comments ? Im hoping to hold onto this thing for 20 years or more, so Im a little paranoid.
Thanks, Bill

A small amount i guess is normal, things wear thats why the filter is there. I'd run the new filter for a few hours and change it again, cut it open and inspect how much crud it caught.
