1999 new holland LX885 - wheels started turning after getting dragged short distance

Hey everyone,

I have a 1999 new holland lx885 skid steer. it had to be dragged about 10 feet on concrete in order to get a tele handler machine in a position to pick it up to put it on my trailer after it wouldn't start (long story short). the wheels stayed locked in place for the first 1-2 feet and then all started turning in unison as if the machine was in neutral.

do the hydraulic final drive motors have a bypass valve or something that would allow the wheels to turn or is something broken now?

I charged the battery and will get I to run later today and see if it still drives or not but just wanted to hear from anyone who might know what allowed the wheels to start turning like that

I've drug them around a fair bit, but don't ever remember the wheels turning (on this size machine, smaller ones-yes). Both sides at the same time? Since they are separate pumps and motors, they would have separate relief valves. Curious what you find out.

maybe not what your asking, but just info for you in the future
I own a like machine, same yr even
and I found that if you need to move it without it running, if someone sits in the cab and pushes the levers forward,or backwards, when you try to drag it, it will allow the wheels to turn
if you do NOT push levers,as if driving it, the wheels should NOT turn at all
as far as I know there is no relief valve to allow them to free wheel

it sounds to me like something broke

will it as asked above, free wheel on both sides or just one?
might have broke a chain or chain came off some how in the chain case?

If you are lucky it only freewheeled because you built enough pressure in the drive motors for the barrels to lift off. Turning a motor like that causes it to build pressure, and it has no place to go if the pump is in neutral. If you are not lucky it may have damaged the motors. If it doesn't act exactly like it did before it wouldn't start I would advise you to shut it down before more damage occurs.
