OK so I just picked up my first skid steer (free!). It needs a radiator and all new fluids as it has sat unused (because of bad radiator) for about 8 years. Where to start? I know nothing about it, or what year it is (OLD!). I only know the model number because it is painted in large letters on the sides. :) Where can I find the serial number to figure out what generation it is so I can start searching for parts and service manual. Thanks in advance! Can't wait to get it running and have a tractor that will fit in the bar for cleaning stalls! My current tractor is just too big- a 1945 Farmall M with huge trip loader (soon to be for sale, I hope!). ~Kevin

You can't go wrong with that price.
No idea on the serial number, sorry. What other parts do you need? you may be able to source some that will still work and not have to go to your dealer, if they even have parts available still.

It has four brand new tires on it, I figure for the price of scrap and the tires I can get my gas and trouble out of it if I can't make it work. Engine looks nice and clean though (it is a Ford motor) so I think I can salvage it. I really want a smaller loader for on the farm- my tractor needs 8.5' clearance on the top and is over 8' wide so will not fit in my barn! I will post more information on it after I go through it this weekend- maybe take a couple pictures and see if anyone can help me source parts. So far all I know it needs is: Radiator (hoses are still there) Air cleaner for carb some gas caps- right now the carb and two rear tanks are covered in foil!!!

Do you have any pictures you can post to help identify your machine? A 440 Case skidsteer is a fairly new machine and does not have a for engine in it.

I tried to get pictures yesterday only to find a complete lack of AAA batteries in my house that worked. Will get some tonight- it says 440 Hydrostatic in 6" tall letters on the loader arms, and the engine clearly has FORD Commercial on the valve cover... When looking online I see the 440 machines are a lot newer than this could possibly be, so I have no idea. I found no vin/manufacturers tag on it - only lots of rust. :) Should I pull the motor and rebuild it or just go with the assumption it will run like I was told. I was told the only thing wrong with it was it got backed into a fence and put a hole in the radiator. The barn already had a new skid steer so this one was parked- then someone came along and told them he could fix it cheap. He took off all the broken parts and was never seen again... LOL! That was about 5 years ago.

I would be interested to figure out what this machine really is. As you have figured out the 440 machines are way newer and Case never used a Ford engine in any skidsteers.

It may not be a Case. I have found nothing on it denoting what "brand" it is. I only assumed it was a case because I Googled "440 hydrostatic skidsteer" and figured it was a Case. I figured the new ones are "series 3" so maybe I had a series 1 or two. Digging deeper I see no older models of 440 and internet searching finds no other 440 model skid steer loaders... I will get some pictures tonight and post them, provided I have time. Going to the dealer to pickup my new Ram 3500 tonight. :)

Turns out this is not a Case as I first thought. I found the MFG tag plate and it is an OMC 440 (1971). I have started a new thread in the Mustang section.
