case 40xt wiring to the alternator

I am trying to figure out what my voltages should be on the back of the alternator. On the white wire that is supposed to turn on the alternator i have 0 volts. I know that is an issue i have to fix. When I put 12 volts to it the alternator does not charge. the charging wire which runs to the battery is 12.5 just as the battery is. The red wire which runs through the resistor and to the fuse panel has 3 volts. I need to know if that is correct. I have a replacment alternator and dont want to fry it.
