I had my head rebuilt and am reinstalling everything. I am about to set the valve clearance on it. I have to set #1 cylinder to TDC. #1 as I understand it is the closest to the fan, correct? So I will pull the glow plugs and turn clockwise at the crank nut.... but how do I tell where I am I am very close as I had the head off and saw the piston but is there a mark somewhere or what is the procedure? I couldn't find it in the 422/M2 manual. Thanks!!!

I should add, that I see the timing mark plate but there is no corresponding mark on the crank pulley. Am I missing something or what is the next best way?

I think if you put your finger over the hole you will feel it blowing out then feel the valves

Some times they are even on the fly wheel.
I assume the head is already on? if it's not torqued down yet, you may want to remove it and put marks on the pulley so you know where TDC is. Then to work out which one is firing, look for the one that both valves are closed at TDC, repeat for all cylinders.
If the head is on, there is a possibility you can use a piece of wire after removing a glow plug or injector to feel when it's at TDC.
Hopefully someone can give you better advise. I have been lucky enough for all the engines i mhave messed with, had timing marks easily seen.

Just wondering did you pull the engine to do your job , or is it possible to leave the engine in the machine and work from the top down . I have to look at my rings as my engine is burning some oil . thks bingo. my machine is a 2006 410.
