Hey there! New to the forum but I'm amazed by the knowledge and great advice I've seen here. I've owned my skid for about 3 months. About a month ago I found out I had a fuel leak that was leaking fuel into the engine and mixing with the oil. What tipped me off to the problem was a low oil pressure light coming on. I had to finish what I was doing that day and it still seemed to be running fine with no oil light if I kept it at 80% throttle. By the end of the day I noticed a light tapping sound in the engine and it seemed there was a little more exhaust smoke than normal. It didn't take long for that little tapping noise to turn into more of a knock at higher RPM's and started smoking a ton - quite a bit on start-up, and tons at higher RPM's - burning nearly a gallon per hour of oil. I know I should have done the repairs before it got this bad, but I had to finish the project I was on so thats where I am now. I know without looking at it its impossible to say for sure, but what are the possible diagnosis? Head gasket? how long should a head gasket job take? Is it worth doing the timing belt while im in there doing repairs? How long should t-belt replacement take? Thanks so much for any and all help!!

Sorry, forgot to mention its a 2001 model 863
I am sure you will be made aware that a $40 or $50 oil change has turned into a repair that may cost thousands. Take it to the dealer and get a evaluation and estimate . Do not run it till you put fresh oil in even to load on trailer.

Yes, I have been made aware of that. I have fixed the fuel leak and changed the oil. I don't have a dealer nearby so looking to have repaired by a local diesel mechanic, but he doesn't seem to know these machines and the Deutz engine as well as many of you guys here. Wanting to be sure his diagnosis seems right and the labor hours seem right. Thanks again for the help!

The fuel in the crankcase thinned out the oil to the point that nothing was getting lubrication. The knocking and smoking sounds like bearings and cylinder wear. No way to tell for sure without a complete tear down and inspection.

Sadly i have to agree with the above posts. When you worked out you had fuel mixing with the oil, even though you had a job to finish you should have changed the engine oil every hour or so if it was critical to get te job done, even more often. A few hundred spent in oil would save the many thousands you may be up for a new engine.
The addition of diesel to the oil had thinned it out to the point that it didn't lubricate properly. The knock sounds like worn rod bearings, the oil consumption will most likely be worn cylinder walls. You may have even taken out your turbo.....
Your diesel mechanic will have to tear it down to work out what is bad. Even if he doesn't know much these engines he will know how to check for wear. Get it apart and work it from there. With a lot of luck, you may be able to get it going without buying a new engine for it.
Do let us know how you go.

it could be as simple as a bent push rod , that engine is notorious for it and it fits your problem , but that seems wishful thinking but worth checking , I would do a compression test before pulling anything down , this will help to target the problem --------------I have always found the Duetz engines are very unforgiving when it comes to oil problems , the Kubota will take a lickin' and keep on kickin'

The extra oil concumption is what concerns me.
A compression test is a good idea too, i think it will still need pulling down to find out what bearing is bad making the clunking noise.

life may not be so bad the deuetz is atough beast. probally nothing more than a blown head gasket..

I would pull the valve cover, quick and easy. See if push rods are bent. If so , timing belt. If not pull the head you see what you need from there. should take about an hour. sstec
