Hello, I have a 1982 Bobcat 642 with the Ford 1.6 liter engine. The machine starts and runs good with decent power, but when starting the machine it is fine at first, but about 5 seconds after starting it starts to smoke pretty bad. I checked compression and it is about 110-120 psi on all cylinders. It is also getting some back pressure on the oil fill cap and starting to blow the front oil seal. Could this possibly be caused by cylinder washdown if I am running rich (carb or ignition adjustments) or is it likely needing a top end rebuild? If it needs an overhaul is it better to do this right away or wait until it dies? Thanks for ideas

110-120 sounds pretty good. What colour smoke? if its white/blue its oil. If its black its too ritch.
I wonder if it could be a sticky choke?
You mention back pressure, make sure your breether is working, there should be no back pressure, i thought it should be plumbed back into the intake?

Tazza, thanks for the ideas, the smoke is basically a greyish color. I will check on the choke as that sounds like a good idea. Related to the breather, I have checked and don't believe that this model 642 has a breather. Am I wrong on that. I thought that the oil fill cap provided the breather for this Ford 1.6 motor. I would be happy to be wrong so that I could fix this. Thanks

I have no idea how it is designed to breethe too.... Hopefully someone with one of these machines can shed some light on it.

My 742 has the 1.6L Ford Cortina gas motor. It has a Breather Cap/ Oil Filler on the valve cover and then a draft type breather on the left side of the engine block just to the machine front of the fuel pump. Both have mesh elements that can be removed & cleaned in solvent. Not equipped with Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Dick

Thanks, this is really helpful! Did you say the draft breather was in front of the fuel pump? Matt

I checked it out and it looks like the version of the 1.6 motor I have does not have the second breather and only has the oil fill cap breather. Is this a design flaw with the motor and could I adapt this to provide more ventilation to avoid the high crankcase pressure I am seeing?

I've got a 1.6 Ford in my 722, oil fill & breather combo. It is well worn and the breather is letting some smokey oil film out onto the valve cover. When the engine was new the breather probably absorbed what little little blow by there was. Now, I've swapped the original breather for one with an additional 5/8" port. Plan on plumbing this into the intake hose and letting the engine suck it up & burn it. Just like the old Chevy PCV system.

That sounds like a great idea, maybe I will try this too. As I found out in searching through my service manual, this Ford 1.6 on the 642 apparantly didn't inlclude the separate breather and a service update in my manual shows that you are supposed to add this breather assembly and also add new valves that appear to be shorter than the originals. Anybody know where I could find the old breather assembly? I checked with Bobcat and they don't make them anymore?

Well, the photobucket's not spitting out friendly links for me but there's a simple picture of a Mr Gasket vented breather that popped in the factory hole & will work to get that oil film off your engine. O'reillys had it on the shelf, the easy button.
