Would it be beneficial to replace the plastic tank with a steel one? Never thought about the plastic tanks.. Mick why not post pics of your replacement project

a rock between the fuel tank rubbing a hole in the oil pan is very common and it seems to happen more to the Duetz and Perkins than the Kubotas , I have never seen a hole rubbed in the fuel tank from the top side , but I have seen it on the sides of the tank , it is amazing that the plastic doesn't get a hole and the metal does ----------- I would be sure to change the rubber bushings of the motor mounts while you got the motor out , I would bet if you were to use a bar you can make the motor move up and down a lot right now , the oil softens the rubber and the motor sags down lower than usually , and when your back up running it would be a good idea to pressure under the oil pan every so often --------------

Way overdue UPDATE: Well it took forever due to being laid up sick for eight months in addition a local shop had it for another four months and did nothing so I went back and pulled it home and tackled this with a friend and myself. The Deutz BF4M1011F in my 863 Bobcat Skid Steer is finally out and the pan off. Man I have parts all over my shop, Along with the hole in the pan #4 crankshaft bearing was wiped out. Before I get raked over the coals by the local so called "DIESEL EXPERT" is there anybody out there that can tell me what the best way to repair this? I have pictures of the shavings that were in the pan and it looks like there is still a fair amount of what's left of the bearings where they belong. Everything else looks good from the bottom end. I have not pulled the head off yet.

I guess the best plan is to pull the bottom end and see just how bad the damage is. I'd guess the crank will need welding or replacing if the marks are bad, as you said there was a lot of bearing particles, it doesn't sound pretty. If it was a rod bearing, you will need a new rod.
As it was using oil, it is possible it has damaged a bore too.
You really need to get it apart to work out just what is needed and if your friendly local engine rebuilding shop can do the work, saves having to deal with your Deutz dealer.
