Hi all newbie here so be gentle. I just bought tan older 743 this past weekend. The key switch is not working. I was able to start it by jumping the solenoid. It starts but take a bit of turning over to get running. If the key switch is working, will the glow plugs warm up before starting? Does anyone have a wiring diagram i can take a look at to get this thing working? The machine is in otherwise great condition. I cant wait to get this thing "turn key". Thanks in advance for your help.

In a word - Yes. Your machine should start much easier if the glow plugs have chance to go through their cycle prior to engaging the starter.

There are several different wiring diagrams for the 743. I need your serial number to post the correct one.

Another way to get it to start if you don't have the switch wired up just yet. In the engine bay, on the left are two solenoids. One is start, the other is glow. If you jump the glow one for say 15-30 seconds, temove the power then jump the starter one, it should burst into life almost straight away.
The wiring on a 743 is very simple, the biggest flaw is the wiring harness where the engine and cab harnesses join. They get corroded and break, don't over look it if you have problems getting the new ignition switch to work. Generally the switches are wired so its glow to the left, crank to the right.

I put the wiring diagrams for your serial number in a pdf file and uploaded it here.

If you check it all and determine it is just the key switch that is faulty, I would get a price for a new one from you local bobcat dealer. I would assume they are not that expensive.
Then all you have to do is replace the switch and you will not have the butcher any wiring.
As Tazza said, to activate the glow plugs the key turns to the left and you hold it, then to activate the starter motor you turn the key to the right.
