642 project

I remember when my 743 looked like that, my cousin came over and said it looked like a fridge! so very white

well I painted the ole girl yesterday. geeesh what a beech of a job! 2 qt's self etching primer and 3 qts of bobcat white.turned out real nice. I would post up picies but it looks exactly like the one posted. plus I am lazy and worn out. Finally I can start putting stuff back together WEEEEEEEEEE!

They sure do look nice after painting! but everything you bump makes your curse when using it... I have a few scratches on mine now, but its a work machine, not to sit there looking at you will get marks on it no matter what.

I put the paint on this 10 years ago and if I did it today I would paint the chain case and powder coat the rest. I still have parts to paint as I ran out of paint back then and called it a day .

Power coating would give a great finish, but the cost!!!!

I have a good contact by me and can get it at a good price the small stuff when I need it right away Ill go with any color they are running (black most of the time)to do the bobcat without the loader 375-400. range not over 500 and thats all the small parts.When adding the cost of the painting supply's and the fact that it covers better its well worth it.

Thats pretty cheap, i spent close to that on 2 pack paint for my 743!

powder coating SOUNDS real good but I would never ever powder coat a bobcat frame or arms there is alot of A-36 steel in this machine and powder coating requires 400 degrees F and that would anneal A-36 that would be a BAD BAD THING!!!!!!!!!! that would actually be worse that rebuilding a machine that has been inside of a building that burn't to the ground. NOT GOOD!

400F is hot enough for that?
I wonder how that kind of heat would go with the panels then, i never thought it was hot enough to cause distortion due to expansion.

400F is around the tempering temp for steel but to anneal you'd need above 1350F. You can tell by looking at the way the paint peels off a Bobcat that they are powder coated from the factory.

either om or I are mistaken! we lick a-36 sheet with open flame to easilly cold form we call it annealing. which turns a36 shhets into very easilly cold form able sheet. annealing must be the wrong word.

bobcat does not use powder coating on the machines, attachments yes but not the machines to the best of my knowledge.

Annealing is heating steel at or near the critical temperature(1350F-1600F depending on carbon content) and then cooled slowly to produce material that if soft and free of stresses. Tempering or drawing is the process of heating to 300F-700F to reduce bittleness and or to bring a heatreated part down to a specific hardness. A36 hot rolled plate and bars are cold formable without heating if you're using press brake if you're bending manualy then you are just heating it to allow you bend it.
If you look at where a piece of paint flakes off on a newer Bobcat you'll see that there's no primer under the paint justed etched steel which leads me to believe they are powder coated.
