i came across a run down L785 w/perkins power i am thinking of buying it and doing a ground up rebuild ( its rough but cheap and all there). i have been looking into the VTS track system and found a few used ones has anybody else put a vts system on their new holland and how you like it.

before i bought a track machine i looked at the VTS for my LS 185b. the ones i found used were in good condition but expensive...about $9900.00. I researched them a bit and found maybe 2 or 3 slight negatives...slower speed..robs a little power..and it's still running off chains , not hyd motors . Some said it was hard on the chain and a couple had chain breakage. But you never know how hard they were running it or abusing it.

I LOVE the L785. I have one on the farm, and would trade it for anything.(Although tonight it left me sit, and I think the injection pump went on it). The only real down side is the perkins can be hard to start in cold weather. The best things about them are: 1. 2 speed 2. E brake that actually work unlike the LS,LX machines 3. Very little expensive electronics If you dont buy it tell me where its at!!

i thought about that chain situation i just figured i put new chains in it during the rebuild to help with avoiding that problem i still gotta do some reserach. i broke a chain in my 553 one time right after i got it, i chalk that up to operator error (mine), lol. what a mess to fix. the perkins engine thats in it is a 4.203 engine 58 hp. i was told that a 4.236 will fit right in with more power about 75 hp? but i gotta see if the hydros will survive with the increased hp. there is also a cat engine 3024 that will bolt in but i still need to do more reserach on that as well. as far as hard starting my 553 has the 1902 kubota it dosent like the winter either, lol i going tommorow and look at the machine agin to see what attachment plate is on it (old style new holland or a new generation style. i understand that there is new track machines out there but i have alot of attachments for the old style hookup and i wanted a bigger machine with more power and tracks (i tired of being stuck in the mud) my 553 is in good condition but i could use a 2ed skidder.

well i bought the 785 today so the winter project is on. im thinking ill get all the mechanicals working good before i look at the cosmetics. maby ill figure how to do digital photos and post them through the rebuild.

well i got it home it runs like a rabbit, the engine seems really strong considering the seller says he thinks it broke a piston because it has a excessive engine oil leak. the arm piviots on the boom and arms seem really nice no slop in the pins & the mounting plate is really good rubber is 20% all the way around, cosmetically it's rough, e brake works very good i have some questions. :::: 1. moving the machine the sticks gotta be pulled or pushed foward and backwards nearly their entire travel to move. my 553 the movement of the sticks is very slight to operate the machine. i pulled the seat on the 785 & the servos seem to have alot of sloppy play on the rod from the comtrol levers and on the rear of the servos it connect to something and there is play there. :::: 2. when turning its a squealer i noticed some conditionsation in the hydo fluid i'll start there. :::: 3. the hi low i worked it back and forth it didnt seem to matter it still went pretti good not sure what this lever does couldn't tell much by the new holland schmatic what the rod connects to or what the metal pieces at the end of the rod actuate to create the hi low range. any suggestions on any of the 3 issues im all ears.

i noticed someone removed the dip stick on this unit could someone with a perkins in a l785 (4.203.2 engine) measure their dip stick from tip to the stop below the handle and how far up on the stick the full line is from the tip thank you just post the length on here so i can make a new stick thanks agin

well i finally got back to the 785 project this weekend i dove into the electrical. the previous owner had wires cut and spliced all over the place by passing the harness in spots a real frankenstein, no dash lites, alt wire hack to hell, battery cables the same, hydro selnoid on the control pump by the left pedal had been by passed they had it wired to a toggle switch & hook to direct power (lol), fuel gage inop, no buzzer, control valve on servo hydro wireing chewed up electric fuel pump no power wiring. Well after figuring out the main problem (relay up in the front lite box along side of the switch panel was bad i reconnected all the origional cut off wires and re did the chargeing and battey wireing it all works).......Now the problems i havent figured out yet though, is that now i have the lite panel lighting up i noticed the parking brake lite stays on. it only has a seat switch but the switch isnt there and the wires are just sitting there....Next i have one wire in the engine bay i havent figured out yet its whiteishyellow with a black strip it comes out of the harness on the backside of the engine where the servo pressure switch wiring comes out of the harness but i cant tell if it goes some where to the right or the left i did notice it had sleve on it like new holland uses on its engine sender wires(like coolant, or fuel senders).... The last wire i havent figured out either is a wire coming off the center of the ingition switch ,heavier short wire (4" to 5" long) green or black wire, it's an oem wire.... Any suggestions on the few i havent figured out yet will be a great help. thanks

ok figured out the brake lite on the dash and figured out the green wire off the center of the ignition switch. still havent figured out the yellow with black stripped wire yet.
