Anyone know if the coil would be an external resistor or internal? I'm assuming and external because of the resistor and rectifier module but I've learned that assuming can be dangerous Thanks

The coil should be a internal resister type. The Wisconsin part number is YF38B. The Borg Warner number is E502.

Old machinist.......would that still be the case if you switched the system to an electronic ignition and delco single pole alternator (from the old gen/regulator)?
You shouldn't have to change coils to convert to electronic ignition and the charging circuit is seperate from the ignition.
If your coil is old you may want change it to get the most out of the conversion.
