my dad has an old M-970 that he loves dearly injection pump is dead right now. we found an 853 at what sounds like a good deal 5000 idk what year it is im gonna say 97 or later has an aulim plate that says somthing was revised sept 97 on the back of the cab above the radiator cover. just wondering how reliable is the izuzu 4cly deisel in them? the perkins thats in our 970 is great was rebuilt in mid 90's. this 853 is to use while the 970 is down and will probly remain with us as a backup and for smaller places the 970 cant fit. does anyone know what brand hydrostats are in the 853's weve had good luck out of sunstran thats in the 970. the 853 has 2000 some hours and leaks oil from two triangular shaped holes in the belly pan at the back wondering whats above them for it to leak hydraulic lines?

That Isuzu is a good engine and a great starter and a reliable engine. Very common in reefer units too. But with 2000 hours should be good for a long time yet. The 853 and 863 is not the nicest driving bobcats as they have no feel or feed back in the steering sticks like the 700 series do, making them harder to drive in a stright line at slow speeds or pick up a attachment etc. Recommend you try it out b4 you buy. Otherwise the 853s are a pretty bulletproof loader.
As for leaking out the body drain holes you really need to bring your 3/4" wrench and lift the cab, takes about 1 minute, andhave a look under there for problems. Hoses are cheap to buy but some are difficult to access to change out. Also the leak could be anumber of other things and well worth your time to investigate what your buying. Also look at axel seals and lift the machine off the gound and check the axel bearings for side slop (should be none) buy pushing the wheels in and out. And rotate the tires forward and back to see how sloppy the drive chains are. Enguage the auxilary hydraulics to ensure the work and stop working when you push the switch.

I sold my 96 853H a year ago with 9000+ hrs on it, still going strong. I heard about one that went 14000 hrs with the same motor. Isuzu's are very good on fuel, unlike the Kubota's in the 205. As for the oil leaks, it could be anything. All the oil that leaks on an 853 runs out those triangular holes.

i'm mainly hoping its a busted hydrualic hose. and hoping it isnt the engine thinking about calling local dealer and seeing if they could tell me what kind of service it has had using the serial number it has had the oil canged i think oct of 09 so its had somthing and i hope more of a service history. thanks for the info

If it was the engine it would run out the back door. Those drain hole forward the rear axel pretty much has to be hyd oil, unless the chaincase was leaking by the gear reduction boxes/wheel motors.

I have run into several 853's that leaked hydro oil from the suction hoses between the pumps and engine....sometimes the rubber hose relaxed enough that the hose would fall off. Just needed to put back in place and tighten the hose clamps.

All of the 853's I have used have been solid pieces of equipment...
