I basically blamed everything else also! Dealt with the Same issues your having lots of white sweet smelling smoke . make shore you find top dead center or you'll be chasing it.My valve clearances were way off lol.
Thx for the interest bobcat, it would be great if it turns out to be the clearances so I don't have to throw anymore money at the machine. So your machine had similar issues with hard starting, misfire at certain rpm, and it will smoke white at startup for a little bit, a few seconds, even after running the machine for a while, shutting down for lets say a hour.The upper rad hose is warmish to the touch, not hot when this happens.
yes all the above !Throttle up it hesitated and the smoke never cleared up.I had a mechanic adjust the valves because it was that bad . gl
It does make sense, if it's opening too soon, the air/fuel mixture could be exiting as it ignites.
I've been going over the engine repair manual and it gives the valve adjustment procedure as follows: Check No. 1 valve with No. 8 fully open " " 3 " " " 6 " " " " 5 " " " 4 " " " " 2 " " " 7 " " " " 8 " " " 1 " " " " 6 " " " 3 " " " " 4 " " " 5 " " " " 7 " " " 2 " " I'm assuming that you need to be at tdc no.1 cylinder to check these clearances. But I have a some questions. The manual does not say which cylinder is No. 1 . Would it be the one closest to the water pump side or the opposite ? Can all these clearances be checked with the No. 1 cylinder at tdc or do I need to be rotating the crank to another cylinder position? Valves 1 and 2 would be in cylinder No. 1 and run in order down the block? Thx Randy
I know you can measure multiple valves if you have a cylinder at TDC but i don't believe you can do them all.
Tazza right #1 closest to water pump.rotate tdc you can do half the valves. exh @ int #1 intake#2 crank and exh on #3 - 1 rotation for #4 tdc - intake outtake on # 4 - int on #3 and exh on#2 . If this is your first time it wise to watch and have someone who knows first. I was nervous causing more damage than its worth.
It's not my first time but it's been along time! 25 yrs ago I had a old ford mustang that I did valve adjustments on and seemed to turn out ok. But I think you guys are right and I'm going to get a diesel mech friend to par take in the process. Also it turns out that I don't have a large enough socket to fit on the crankshaft nut. Yes I remember doing the tdc method with the car and that's the way I would try it. It would be wonderful if this makes a difference. So far getting injectors rebuilt didn't really improve much.
Hey bobkat I'm curious about how your machine started out for you. Did yours have those issues when right when you bought it? Or did they show after sometime with the skid?
The machine ran rough when i purchased it but not much smoke only when start up! .It gradually got worse like it was a fuel issue. I cleaned injector ,new fuel filter no help.gl
Randy - let us know if adjusting the valves helped or not .curious if the problems fixed
