I have a 1999 Gehl 5635 skid steer with hand controls. I drove it up to the garage yesterday to do a general look over on it I lifted the cab and had it running with the cab lifted. I then turned it off lowered the cab and called it a night today I went out and tried to start it and it won’t crank it trys to and sort of shakes the machine a bit but won’t crank. Has anyone ever experienced this? Any ideas or anything to check? It there some sort of wire or something I could have pinched when lowering the cab?

Did you ever figure this out? I'm in the same boat and totally stumped. I locked the loader up and tilted the cab on my 5635 to fix a hydraulic leak under the cab and add in a block heater and now I get one bump out of the starter and that's it. Almost like it's held up against the hydraulic pump or something.

I have a 4835 and had the same situation. Not sure if same, but when lowering the cab, my boom hand control would get caught on part of the cab when lowering, moving the control arm into the float position, which is locked until pulled back by hand. Thus, when trying to start the engine, it can’t because the hydraulic pump is trying to pump fluid to the boom cylinders.

Check the control arms by moving them around. Make sure they are in the center (neutral) position. Hope this helps!!

I appreciate the reply, I thought it was something simple as that, I tried moving all the levers around including locking and unlocking the boom float. Unless one of the hydraulic valves is stuck somehow, but I'm not sure how else to unload them if that's what it is.

I had a very similar thing happen on an old machine of mine. It would just shake and shudder when I turned the key, but the engine wouldn't turn over. My first thought was that the battery was dead, but it was more than that.

The other reply about the hydraulic lock is a great place to start. That's a super common issue. But before you get too deep into the hydraulics, I'd double-check the simple electrical stuff first, just to be sure.

My problem ended up being a bad ground connection. When I lowered the cab, it must have shifted the cable just enough. The starter was getting some power, enough to try and engage, but not enough to actually crank the engine against its compression. It looked exactly like a locked-up engine.

So, here's what I would do: Check your battery terminals.** Make sure they are clean and tight. Then, follow the big black ground cable from the battery to where it bolts to the frame. Take it off, clean the metal on the frame and the cable end until they're shiny, and bolt it back on tight. A poor ground can cause all sorts of weird problems like this. If the ground is good, it's probably that hydraulic lock. Since you already tried moving the levers, maybe try cracking the pressure on one of the auxiliary hydraulic lines just a tiny bit to see if it relieves any trapped pressure. Be careful and have a rag ready!
