We all know the damage these little things can do. To my surprise the other day I while checking the oil. I saw one run out from under the engine. I'm not sure if he bailed out while I was running the machine that day or not. But when I was done, I "popped the hood" and couldn't see any visible damage. I put a trap in the machine and caught one the first night. Yesterday I put a second trap in and caught another within a few hours. This morning the traps were empty. I plan on keeping traps in the machine from now on for prevention. Other than a trap, does anyone else have any good ideas to keep these guys out? Once I heard of someone spraying pepper spray on all of his wires routinely.

If you don't have the pack rats the bait station traps work pretty well, at least for me. The bait stations work if you have pets. If you don't use the bait that comes in pellets. Those work for rats really well. Cats also work really well and have kept them for years until recently. The road close to the farm has become pretty busy and so sooner or later the cats find the road. Some are smarter than others. I've tried the spray and it didn't work that well for me. I have also tried moth balls without much success.

I use oil of peppermint and oil of spearmint. Not sure which (if either) works the best, but it's something to try. I can't say for sure that it works, but it seems to help. Either sprinkle drops around, or soak a cotton ball and put that in a corner. Either way needs renewing every month or two. I've tried drilling a 1/8" hole in the bottle top and inserting a "wick" made of a wooden stick. Other folks say light keeps them at bay, so maybe a small LED or two in the right places. The current drain would be pretty slight and may run for several weeks before your battery dies. And BTW, I used moth balls under our wood pile at first. I gave up on that when I found a rats nest built on top of the sack of mothballs. Good luck. :-) ---Bobbie-G

I like victor traps with peanut butter and hang some mothball packets in close spaces like engine compartments. Good luck!
