Looking to replace worn out V1702, what about a V2203

Help Support SkidSteer Forum:

The rear mount at the flywheel on the thermo king v2203 is different? The rear seal housing is bigger and the bolt pattern has some difference. How did you get around that?

Hey, old thread resurrection. I put a V2203 IDI in my 743 about five years ago, and just happened to go back into it and overhaul the engine. Excess crankcase pressure due to three cracked compression rings, went .50mm oversize with new pistons. It had blown out the dipstick and the rear main seal, coated the plastic cooling duct with oily muck and plugged both the hydraulic cooler and radiator cores - big mess. Pretty ugly valve recession, too, so it got all new valves and a valve job. I digress.

When I first installed the reefer engine, I had to mill the circle larger in the rear engine mount plate to accommodate the larger rear main seal holder (which is actually also a fore/aft locating feature for the crankshaft.) I TIG welded shut all the existing mounting holes in the rear engine mount and redrilled them for the larger pattern on the V2203 block. There was interference between the Bobcat flywheel and the bolts on the engine's seal holder, so I carefully ground the bolt heads for clearance and clocked them correctly upon reassembly.

I used the 743's original V1702 oil pan, exhaust manifold, and front gearcase cover. The V2203 gearcase gasket I got from Kumar Bros had a slightly different profile near the pressurized oil ports behind the filter, so I omitted it and sealed the joint with a thin coat of Three Bond 1417H.

I have a Facet-style electric fuel pump in my 743 to ease priming the fuel system, so I deleted the engine's mechanical lift pump long ago. Can't recall if the reefer engine had a lift pump driven by the back of the fuel cam or what. IIRC the V1702 had one driven by a lobe on the fuel cam; the provision is there in the V2203 block casting but it's undrilled.

Another really nice modification for the 743 is a spin-on fuel filter adapter kit - google part number 3003-0124. It's compatible with a Wix 33472. Get rid of that godawful stack of o-ring and glass misery and never get diesel trickling down into your armpit again.

A friend of mine got one of those goofy Bobcat 1600 articulated loaders with a bad engine a number of years ago, and it seemed virtually identical to a 743 in the engine bay. We modified the rear engine mount as described above and he put a V2003T into it. Cool little machine.
