After watching a hugely helpful YouTube video on how to replace the plastic plug in a lift spool, one of the steps was to remove the o-ring after you get the plug out, and the video noted that that could be a difficult step.
After removing the plug, I tried to remove the o-ring. After trying for a while, I got out my Harbor Freight inspection camera and in looking town the hole, my 853 from 1993 did not come with a o-ring in front of the plastic plug. At first I thought I was either blind or there was a screwup at the factory. In looking at the parts manual for my model, the old plug was part number 6592752, and the parts manual picture does not show an o-ring. The final clue was that 6592752 has been superseded by 6596807 and the parts manual says to order o-ring 54K-20002 with the new part number. The plugs look different and are slightly different sizes as well. The old plug did not have a male protrusion to hold the o-ring, which the new plug does have. See the pics for details.
