hello i have a jd 24 indutrial version of the 170 i have rebuilt the veriable drive sheave because it was leaking. now my question is the book states to spread the driven spring loaded sheave to replace the belt. but does not state how to spread the sheave any help would be great thanks

I also have a JD 24 and just pulled the transmission out tonight due to the variable drive sheave leaking and saturating the drive belt. How difficult was rebuilding the variable drive sheave and did you ever get your belt on and machine running. Any info would help

Are the driven sheeve just spring loaded? If they are like a snowmobile you should be able to rotate the one half (in only one direction, if forward won't go try backwards) while holding the other stationary. Then pull up on the belt to spead the 2 halves of the sheeve apart, this loosens the belt so you can slide it over the the driven then off the drive pulley.
