Hydraulic Fluid in engine bay

Hi, I've pulled the engine on my Bobcat 642B to replace the U-joints. There is alot of oil/hydraulic fluid that is covering the engine bay. I don't know how long it's been accumulating as I've just purchased the Bobcat. It's a black sludge/film that covers the whole engine bay. Is there a seal where the u-joint shaft goes into the hydrostatic pump (a seal that can be replaced on the hydrostatic pump on the rear) Thought I'd ask while I have the engine out. Thanks for the help.

Yes there is, I have never done one but there are some threads here n that topic. I don't believe it takes anything too special.
Search pump seal.
Here is one thread

When the engine is out, check that the oil is indeed comng from the seal. If not, you may have a leaky oil cooler or tube line that is dripping oil onto the fly wheel and being slung around.
Replacing the seal should be pretty simple, i have done it in a 743 before while in the machine still. They use the same pump.

Tazza, I have the service manual but it doesn't show a breakdown of the hydrostatic pumps. It says "see the component repair manual for hydrostatic pump for disassembly and assembly procedure". Is there such a manual? I haven't been able to locate it. Do you have a repair manual for the hydrostatic pump for the 743? Thanks for the help.

No manual is needed.
With the engine out, remove the bolt in the end of the splined shaft on the pump. Get a gear puller and tighten it up trying to pull the splined part off. You may need to give the pushing bolt on the puller a sharp hit with a hammer to get the taper to let go. When its off, remove the snap ring that is in the pump housing. Now you will see all of the seal. Drill a hole in the bottom of it, don't push in too far. Using a self tapping screw, plug the hole and use pliers to pull the seal out.
Slide the new seal into place slowly tapping it in. When its far enough in to put the C clip back in do so. Tap the C clip slowly pushing it and the seal into place. When its located the ring will snap into place. This will keep the seal square in the housing.
When the seal comes oit, oil will come out too, not really fast, but fast enough to make a mess and fast. Have the new seal ready to go before you drill the hole and remove the seal.
Does that make sense?

Thanks Tazza! Yes that makes complete sense.
