Hello All, I am having problems with a fairly high hour (4800hrs) LS140 skid loader w/ N843 engine. Engine start ok and runs, not much smoke of any kind but LOUD knocking noise. Hard to tell if it's top or bottom end of motor. Compression testing on 1 to 3 cylinders was 475, 250 and 325 - so 2 and 3 are low to spec. This was not a wet test and cold. My planned next steps: 1) Confirm valve setup / clearance 2) Check timing 3) Pull head - should I do something else prior to this? I have the complete shop manual - if I am going down a path of a complete rebuild, any other advice? Anything else that I should be concerned about with this loader and given it's hours? Hydro seems OK but I very reluctant to run it much. I will replace all filters / fluids and lube prior to use. Have been sourcing parts from Messick's Tractors. Thanks, Fred

I dont know who makes the engine but if theres any way you can get the parts from anyone other than the dealer you will save a ton.
Messixs is as good as you will find as far as dealers go. If the engine is a kubota there is a lot of sources of parts.I rebuilt a 65H/P 3cyl. Ford in a LX865 and it was dealer parts only.Very Expensive.
There arent a lot of New holland members here so if you Identify the manufafture of the engine someone may be able to give you more direction on parts. Is the N843 made by ford? Sone of these engines are used in other skid steers.
As far as the hydrostatic/hydraulic system goes. The 4800 hours shouldnt have it worn out. You always have to look at the loader and judge weather someone has hammered the machine. How it was used and maintained makes a big differnce. I hope someone comes on here that knows more about your engine. Mike

It sounds like you may have a valve seat problem or your valve clearance is too small on the low cylinders. Those hours aren't that high, most diesels should do 6,000 or more hours. The knock is a bot of a concern, it could be a worn big end bearing. Whats your oil pressure like?

Thanks Mike for the quick response. The engine is made by IHI Shibaura, 3 cyclinder 32 HP. You can find crate engines at $4200 but I have not seen many parts other than NH dealer. Yes, I did buy this one at a very low price knowing I was going to be doing some engine work. Fred
