Hey All, Long story...GEHL with Deutz diesel engine that hadn't been started in 2 years due to idiot operators causing much damage which was partially repaired by a local shop before they went under. The oil pan (new) and crankshaft (used) were replaced and I was able to finish putting the engine back together. After a lot of work I got it to run but it abruptly quit after a few minutes. At this point it won't turn over. The starter clicks but nothing. I took the starter out and verified that it was turning. I removed the radiator and took off the fan blade and put a ratchet/socket and breaker bar on the large bolt holding on the bottom pulley. I couldn't get it to turn at all. The fan does turn by hand. The battery has been charged and all cables cleaned, including the connection on the starter solenoid. Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks!

Hydro locked? Pull the glow plugs and try cranking it. When it ran was it smoking? Did it sound right? Out of time? The list could go on and on. . . . stec

What do you mean by hydro locked? Yes, when it ran it was smoking pretty good and didn't quite sound right. I think the timing is pretty close to correct.

Duetz are interferce heads, if timing is off enough, the piston will hit the vavle. That said, the push rod gives way saving the vavle. If you didn't roll it, I don't know how it would hydrolock. What color was the smoke?

Hi. First, thanks so much for your help - as my handle says, I'm pretty new to this stuff. So your thought is that a push rod might've broken off? Correct, I didn't roll it. Would I normally be able to turn that bottom pulley on the back of the engine? The smoke was pretty dark. THANKS!!

Deutz motor timing can't be pretty close, ask me how I know. 1 tooth off on the belt and you will bend push rods, the motor will smoke, but it will run. poorly but it will run. There is more to timing them, then using the two timing pins. Again I suggest pulling the glow plugs and cranking it by hand. Just to see if it will turn over. Are the cylinders clear of any and all fluids. Did you set the timing for the injectors? You stated it was a basket case when you got. Someone else had started the repairs and you finished them. Are you sure of the work done before you got it? Call Ron at EPU he knows Deutz motors inside out and can help you figure it out. 203-265-7871 sstec

Hi. Can you point me to any online guide that details how to adjust the timing? So you're saying to remove the glow plugs to release any pressure that may be built up and then try to crank it using the ratchet method I described above? I did gap the injectors as one of the last things I did before actually getting it running the one time. The repair shop I had it at went belly-up and everyone scattered - I was luck to even get the Gehl out of there before the whole thing was chained off. THANKS!!

Pull the glow plugs out of all 4 cylinders. Then use a wrench, socket or what ever and turn it over clockwise from the back end, side with the timing belt. If it turns over easy then try it with the starter. Try that and see what happens. EPU has the Deutz manual 5 or 6 pages on the proper way to set the timing. If you buy parts from Ron he will send you a copy. sstec
