I am the proud and happy owner of a bobcat 863 F series turbo. I have a simple question and looking for any tips out there. When I change the hyd filter, I have tried draining the fluid tank and swap out the filter. I have tried to just change out the filter quickly. both methods results in copious amounts of oil on me, my bobcat and the floor. What is the trick to changing the filter to avoid a gallon of oil running on everything. By the way, no matter how quick I have swapped the filter I still get it all over the place. I was thinking cutting in a shut off in the line somewhere.

Wonder how much oil would drain out if you were to put a makeshift type funnel and a clean pail and just unscrew the filter enough for it to drain into the pail? Might be worth a try.

Тhis oil comes from a hydraulic cooler, which is below the back grille. If you remove the rear grille and lift hydraulic cooler and lean against it so that the joint between the hose and it is at the highest point , oil will not leak much. Will leak only what is in the hose from the radiator to the filter.

I don't know little_fellow. The last time I changed the filter, I drained the entire Hdy tank and put a pan under the filter. I still had a mess. Not much room under the filter to do a fast swap. Plus my fat hands don't help either.

Great suggestion Walio123. I would not have thought of that. I will give it a shot. I tried replying directly to you but would not go through.

Of all the 863 I serviced, I don't remember changing hydraulic filter or filters to making a big mess.

ONE VERY GOOD THING ABOUT THE HYDRAULIC OIL POURING OUT / BEING WASTED IS THE OPPORTUNITY OF TOPPING OFF WITH FRESH FLUID. HYFRAULIC OIL CAN COLLECT A LOT OF WATER & BECOME MILKY, IF NEGLECTED OVER TIME. (BESIDES, WHEN IS THE LAST TIME A PART FAILED BECUASE THE FLUID WAS TOO CLEAN??) I CURRENTLY HAVE A VERY OLD BACKHOE WHERE THE ENTIRE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM IS HEAVILY CONTAMINATED WITH A LOT OF WATER. WHILE THE SYSTEM STILL WORKS VERY GOOD, THERE IS NO EASY WAY TO GET ALL OF THE WATER OUT OF THAT PIECE OF EQUIPMENT. I'VE ALREADY DRAINED THE HYDRULIC TANK (3) TIMES AFTER RUNNING EACH HYDRAULIC FUNCTION ON THE MACHINE. I'VE ALREADY SPENT OVER $300 FOR 30 GALLONS OF FLUID. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, I'M STILL A VERY LONG WAY FROM HAVING THAT MACHINE WATER FREE. I'VE STARTED TO THINK THAT SOMEONE MIGHT HAVE INTENTIONALLY POURED WATER INTO THAT HYDRAULIC SYSTEM. I'VE JUST NEVER SEEN THAT MUCH WATER IN ONE MACHINE BEFORE NOW.

Old Farmall's like my H are notorious to build up a lot of water in the rear end from condensation. I drained easily 3 gallons of water out of the rear end last year. Granted it probably hasn't been changed since the Eisenhower administration. Your backhoe could be very much the came way.

yes. I suppose you could be right. On yours, is there any obvious water entry paths? On mine, it is not as simple to fugure out for sure. At any rate, I have started a thread titled "MILKY HYDRAULIC FLUID"!
