Hello looking for abit of help with about a 1976 OMC Mustang 440 sid steer (stick on each side of seating) it has the large variable speed belt setup I was told this was like a JD24, so I got a manual for the JD 24 as I could not find one for the 440 of my era, all I could find was hydrostatic drive manual, anyhow what makes this this stop? the jd24 actually has a hydraulic brake (with its own pedal) and brake drums on the front wheels, my unit was about as dangerous as one coudl stand taking it off the trailer, let alone trying to work with it on a hill I'll also be replacing the drive belt this weekend I hope, (it snapped right off the bat) anyhow I have a few other questions as well, like the lever to the lower left side of seat (behind your left leg) what is it for? I know what the throttle lever is, and the lever for the varible speed on the right side of seat, and foot pedals now, I sure would like to know how to make this thing stop living in the mountains here thank you

Sounds like it has clutch /chain drive like a bobcat 610. If so the little lever behind left leg is the variable speed adjuster. It should be connected to a valve and hoses from the valve to the end of the drive sheave. If there is no parking brake it's like the 610 I had and you brake it by using pressure on the clutches in the opposite direction of travel. So if you are coming off the trailer front first when it begins to coast put a little pressure on the sticks in the reverse direction. If you are using it in steep hilly terrain good luck and save your money up for a hydrostatic machine. I did use mine on a steep hill but only after I was really familiar with it and always with seat belt. Once you are used to it you will also use the bucket for a brake.

Yes, it is supposed to be a clutch drive , I do not know what a 610 is like, I know which is the variable speed lever, the lever i'm talking about is mounted on the part under the front seat, anyhow, there is no parking brake on this machine, I thought maybe it was supposed to break when the levers were in a neutral position, so I guess it does not do that, Thank you, i'm going to look into adjusting the drive clutches on it as well this does not have a seat belt, in fact the part the keep the seat from flipping up is gone, I assume it was a cover over the engine, ill have to make a good sturdy seat belt for this, I notice the one drrive arm seems to have more play than the other, so perhaps I will take those big side covers off and see what is in there, there are two large nuts with what looks like an adjustable bolt (has two flats on it) that come out of the side plates too, they must be adjustment for something, ill dig into finding that out this morning thanks!
