I'm trying to repair the tilt cylinder on a old mustang 940. Anyone know the procedure on how to remove the tension spring .I looked on utube and they showed how to remove the medal rod that you spin the cylinder clock wise through a elongated hole . This cylinder only has a hole you can not spin the cylinder to remove the tension rod . i'll try anything at this point . Thanks

Can you get a picture of it? If it's the style i'm thinking of, you need to spin the gland to get it to poke out of the hole. Getting a grip on the gland can be hard though.

Tazza thanks for replying . Supposedly the only way to remove the tension rod is to put a small philips screw driver in the hole and it releases tension and at the same time yank the pistons out of the cylinders. The tension spring lost all tension from sitting in there for years so i end up enlarging the hole and cutting the u shape rod I will try to post pictures .Thanks again

I fixed your link and added the image to your post.
The cylinder i worked on with this style of locking ring had a slot cut in the side, you rotate the gland and use a screw driver on the tip of the ring as it passes the slot to make it exit the cylinder. I would have thought a simple thread would have been much easier.
I have seen one that used a large snap ring, not sure how it managed to hold back the load, but it did without damage.
