I have a 1998 885 with some issues and could use some suggestions /help. #1 - bucket slowly un-curls when full of gravel (it just started doing this), I have to keep tipping it back up to keep from spilling my load. Hydraulic fluid is full, however I have been using tractor hydraulic fluid to top it off instead of 10W30. I did replace a burst hose previously could there be air trapped in the system over a period of months ? #2 - machine is very growly when traveling forward or backwards. It is not a grinding or metallic noise but is quite loud. Where would I start to trouble shoot this ? #3 - possibly related to #2. Can someone tell me how to check the oil in my final drive gear boxes ? My machine does not have dipsticks on the final drive gear boxes but does have some 90 degree elbows with some vents. Or do I drain them and add a fixed amount of oil ? I assume that one fills the oil through these vents ? #4 - tach readout sometimes reads zero RPM and then after a few cycles will work for a while or not. I have cleaned all connections on the EIC terminals and the wire going to the alternator. Not sure where to go next ? #5 - When I have the bucket down and am traveling forward the bucket follows the contour of the ground, when I go over a root or a rock the boom goes up and slams back down hard. I am afraid I am going to break something. I understand there is some kind of a float mode for the boom but I cannot get it to stay in the fixed/locked down position. Sorry to put so many problems in one thread but I thought it would be better than multiple posts.. thanks in advance any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.,

I would think your tilt cylinder might need to be resealed........my chaincase has a plug in the front ........But need to take the top off to clean and refill might be a good time to do this then you can use they hydro fluid to fill the chaincase and give the hydro new and proper fluid

The float is set by going all the way down and pushing the pedal a bit more if not in float might need those cylinders resealed to

It does sound like bad cylinder seals, The gear cases have vents on the elbows? On my new Holland the vents are up on the top of the case but the elbows are the fill point so I would fill it up to the elbow with 75-90 gear lube. Ask Mike10 if you can convert the gearcases so they are common with the chain case for oil, I did it and works fine for me.

I have an Lx 885 and can give a bit of insight. The bucket uncurling is either bad seals on the tilt cylinders or the valve not holding pressure. It sounds like you are in float mode if the boom is following the contours of the ground. When you push down all the way, the pedal should latch into a detent for float. Does the boom stay up if you raise it a few inches? The final drive gear boxes are lubed from the chain case. The chain drags through a trough of oil on the bottom of the chain case, and drips off of the chain into a funnel that weeps oil into the chain case. There is then a weep hole out of the gear case that returns oil to the chain case. there is an allen screw on the side of the chain case near the front on each side. With the machine parked level, fill the chain case til it starts running back out of that plug. If you think that the gear boxes may be low, you should remove the access covers to the chain case and fill the gear boxes through the vent elbow until you get oil running back to the chain case. If you go to this trouble, clean the trough while you are in there, and replace with fresh gear oil.
