863 Turbo Failure??

I have a 863 that smokes like a chimney and has low power. I have checked all the usual suspects, air intake restrictions, filters etc. It has been like this since I bought it at auction. I can stick my fingers into the turbo intake and it seems to turn freely but never hear any turbo whine and even if I run it up to high idle and shut it off I do not hear the turbo wind down. Is it possible for the turbo to spin and still be bad?? I see allot of folks selling turbos for the 863 so In assume they must fail on a regular basis but do not look forward to changing to turbo considering where it is. THANKS!!

First, I don't know how to troubleshoot the turbo. I have heard turbos spin down when engines were shut off, but I've never heard that on my particular 863. On my 863, the studs holding the turbo broke, so I had to pull the whole mess out. All three were broken inside the turbo, so once the turbo was out, it was easy to extract the broken pieces from the turbo itself. If your turbo turns out to be bad, a three years ago a new one from Memoparts in TX was $406, Bobcat wanted $2450. Working on it turned out to not be that hard. I think I pulled the muffler/air filter housing and could reach around both ends of the engine. Not easy, but not that difficult, bit I had to work by feel. Make sure when you replace it, you secure the intake line from the air cleaner to the turbo properly. I know someone who forgot a similar step once....... :) ---Bobbie-G

OK, went back and reviewed my notes. Turbo swap is a bit more complicated that I indicated, with several twists and turns. If you end up doing that, ask here and I'll post my verbose notes. :) ---Bobbie-G

replace the head gasket.

replace the head gasket.
I guess I could do a comp. check, it has quite a few hours on it since I bought it without any significant change, not a common scenario with a blown head gasket, usually get much worse very fast.

Does the smoke smell like raw fuel? Does the engine consume oil / oil level drop after the machine being used? It could be burning oil that is leaking past the turbo seals. Or, it could be spitting out raw fuel that is not completely burned. I would remove the turbo to completely inspect it or take it to a qualified mechanic that can help you not replace parts that will not help your case.

I wonder if there is somewhere you can install a gauge to see if you are getting boost or not. If it's free to move, i'd think that it should be ok.
Not sure if these have a waste gate or not, but if it was stuck open, the exhaust gas will by-pass not giving boost?

The front side of the engines are pretty difficult to see, but I have never seen a waste gate on these turbo machines. I think installing a T-fitting into the air intake hose is easy to do. Then hook up a typical pressure gauge to it. I'd only expect to see around 3 to 7 psi, though. Since it is a DUETZ engine, it doesn't have a coolant consumption issue. But, it could be a broken piston ring or some other internal "god awful-ness"!!

A bad turbo would most likely be blowing oil out of the exhaust. A bad turbo will still spin unless it is really bad which would be obvious. Check you engine oil level. If it's high, the transfer pump is leaking fuel into the crankcase. If it's low, the pump is possibly sucking oil out and into the fuel. A duetz will run without the pump even working, but have no power. If it's pressure is low and it's pulling oil, that could cause your problem.

The turbo on the 863 DUETZE is very good. When it comes to smoking guns.I would look at timing belt, Then injector brakeout pressure. Leaning more to injector brakeout pressure. Not hard for the Bobcat Dealer to spec and check

tellining you its the head gasket now ive only done about about a hundred or so.?

Being an oil cooled engine, 7lbssmallie has a point.
as stated ive only done a hundred or so. now is turbo inspection important hell yea do you replace the timining belt inspect the push rods. hell yea my advice . pull the head send to head dude. inspect no scrach that replace timining belt. inspect bores (note on this looking down from top you are goining to see what i call shrunken piston syndrome. top of piston will be worn dont sweat it its normal if head dude says its viable put it back together. it will be happy. these deuetz are like us marines eat sand crap glass.
