It could be a few things. Did it just start doing it? is there any blue in the smoke?
It could be a turbo issue, injectors could be leaking or carbon on the tips causing the fuel to not all burn causing black smoke.
Your timing belt may have jumped a tooth causing the fuel injection to be too late and not all burn up. The belt needs to be changed every 1,000 hours.
