I need help. 751 w peugeot engine (Lucas Pump). Starts up and runs about 30 sec. The first 15 or so seconds it runs clear and smoothe then it puffs smoke and dies. I can keep it running by squeezing the bulb and if I squeeze really hard the smoke goes away. Pick-up tube is in good shape. Does this sound like a pump problem?

Seems like the pump or simply restricted flow. This problem comes up often and lots of guys here to help, I have a 825 and recently was troubleshooting this same problem.. I see you started with the pick up tube which is the first place to start. I would start checking fuel lines for restrictions, plugged up or whatever. I had a check valve on the lift pump full of crud that was restricting the volume of fuel, so mine only seemed to stall when the throttle was over half way. If the primer bulb fixes the problem, I would guess the lift pump may be the culprit.

I would use a bottle if fuel to by-pass the line to the fuel tank. The lift pump is actually built into the injector pump..... Its odd that it blows black smoke, lack of fuel doesn't normally cause smoking it just stalls.
Use a bottle of fresh fuel just before the primer bulb and see if it fixes the problem, if so, you have a problem in your fuel line from the tank to the primer bulb.

I already did the fresh bottle of fuel @ the primer bulb and it doesn't fix the problem. But yes the smoke thing seems odd to me also. I wander if the guy who put the belt on got it back in time.

How is the peugeot engine normally shut down? Does it use a choke in the air intake? I ask becuase it sounds like something is shutting it down like a low oil pressure safety. Maybe when you had it worked on something didn't get plugged in or hooked up right.

If squeezing the primer bulb keeps it running, doesnt it have to be a fuel delivery issue?? I am asking, not arguing BTW. I dont know the machine at all.

It has an electric solenoid for shut down. I did take the plunger out of the shut down switch to make sure that wasn't the problem.
