Lift up the back of the cat get some rags with a stick and clean it up good with diesle
I have done all the rags/stick/jack bit and it is pretty clean where I can see things. I'll do that again after putting a bit of diesel fuel in and sloshing it around. I'll also check the wheel bearings, if I find any end-play I'll report results here for further discussion. How about the one chain guide that is loose? It doesn't seem loose on that big screw, like I can't just turn the hex-head to tighten the screw. Is there a nut on the outboard side? Are those chain guides adjustable?

The big bolt goes into your gearbox reduction and the guide has a bushing in it that it is rideing on no problem there can not ajust them the only way to ajust is to move the gear reduction box front to back would not do that would have to replace the seal behind it

Okay, I measured the end-play on the wheel/axle bearings. No play detectable on two wheels, but the LF is about .003" and the LR is about .008" (total in-out for both). I'm intending to call those "good enough", but am wondering if these bearings a ball or tapered-roller? Or, straight roller with some kind of thrust bearing?

Those figures aren't too bad. They are tapered cup and cones with rollers.

It's all back together. I was wrong about that loose chain guide. The big screw through it was tight, the plastic block was pivoting slightly on it
