Hi guys, new to this site. I have a 742 with ford eng smoking badly. I have owned it for 3 months and have tried every oil additive. Smoke is pretty much white and is coming out of oil fill cap as well as exhaust. Antifreeze is clean. Any advise. Thanks in advance

Did you try Rislone ring sealer, if that don't stop the smoke it's really worn out , advice = take dry and wey compression test on all cylinders before dissassembling the engine for a rebuild , I think that is a modified pinto motor you got in there

Thanks for the reply. Is it sold at common auto parts box stores? Also forgot to mention it uses lots and lots of oil.

If its using oil you know what the smoke is then. Your rings and/or bores are worn out. You probably need to get it re-conditioned. The only other thing is valve stem seals, but they would only use small amounts of oil and smoke mainly at startup.

Napa Car Quest or any like that should have it , I had a 87 Chevy truck that would burn 2 quarts of oil a tank of gas and cars would disappear in my rear view mirror when I hit the gas , added the stuff and I could go two tanks of gas to one quart of oil , not to mention I was always having to change 2 plugs from fouling out with oil , it bought time to find another motor ready to drop in , the stuff is suppose to have some fine materials that fill the grooves in cylinder walls , it worked for me , I think I remember hearing a pinto motor can be made to work in that machine

Was that a V4? My brother had one in his Maverick and my sister had one in her Fairmont. A buddy had a 742 and put in a V6 from a Mustang--you should have seen this monster---he had to extend the whole back of the machine about 7-8 inches and install the Mustang radiator to get it to work. And work it did! He got a phenomenal amount of money for it too after he got it done. The Ford engine may be found on some industial generators, wleders, pumps and air compressors. You could also google "repower(ing) 742 bobcat skid steer" and there may be other engines now that could go in it's place like an Onan, Wisconsin, Kubota, or Honda.

Way back on this forum there is a thread on this engine and I think it is a ford fiesta engine but parts from another may fit.

I think it was this site where I seen a V-8 squeezed into a 8 series Bobcat

Thanks for the help. You guys will love this. So I go get the ring sealer last nigh, open the back of the machine and put it in. My 9 year old decides to come out and help, I get distracted. As I pull the machine forward I hear a wood cracking noise. Yep, left the rear open and tore off 6 peices of cedar siding I just installed last summer on the addition I am building!!! I have no idea if the machine is still smoking. Thought you guys would like laugh!!! Do you realy think I need a new engine. It fires right up and runs smooth. I am very mechanical, forgetful, but mechanical. Cant I just rebuild? How involved is it?

Hard to say, a full re-build i would guess around $2,000 but thats really only a guess. You could start by checking compression i guess. Check it *dry* then check it *wet* then you will know if its your rings or possibly just the head/valves.

you may have to give the ring sealer a couple of hours of run time for it to set in --------I truely believe in compression test and oil pressure readings at idle to full before taking it apart so you have an idea of where and what to look for --------how far you need to go or want to go depends on what you find when you break it down and your budget , you may be able to just do rings , but I would at least have the head reconditioned by a shop while it was off ---------rsorry about your damages

Excellent advise.
Let the engine warm and check the oil pressure. If its low when at operating temperature you know the bearings are all worn and will need to be replaced. I totally agree if you have the head off its pointless putting it back on without being re-conditioned. I thought you would be getting seriously fouled up plugs if its burning that much oil, but you said it runs sweet as, just uses oil.
Worst case, i'd pull the engine down and check the bores,if they are within, give them a quick flex hone and a new set of rings. I have had great success doing this in the past.

I will do as you guys suggest. Thanks for all of the tips.

Not that I would ever do this to anything I own or it has any reference to the topic othr than it's a cool engine ring story , I was working in the Gulf of Mexico on platform and drilling rig cranes for about 4 years , rebuilt a Detroit Diesel 4 cylinder in place on location with a crew waiting on it , and it oil smoked on start up bad , looked like it was on fire , a long time oil field mechanic who was working with me on the project said that the rings didn't seal/lap in yet , he went and got a can of Comet or such abrasive cleaner from the galley , took off the air intake hose , cranked the motor wide open and sucked the entire can of Comet thru the motor , we went and had a chill session in the gang house for about an hour , upon return , low and behold no smoke , I would see every crane 4 times a year for a quarterly inspection and that motor ran good with no problems long after that
