742 Fuel Gauge & Sender

My 742 did not have a sending unit when I got it so I installed this:

It only lasts about 4 months, then the sending unit melts. I've replaced it once and the same thing happened. Could this be because I may be getting more than 12 volts to the gauge? Should I add a resistor? Is there something else I can try?

Buy a Dorman 55818. If it fails quickly, start buying gasoline someplace else.

I have had good luck with the universal kits ,why dont you check your grounding , if I remember right you have a plastic fuel tank, and use a volt meter on your charging system hopefully around 14.5 volts when running. I would use 100 percent gas if you can. ethanol can make plastic brittle.

Some parts directly from Bobcat have come down in price including the fuel sending units.
I always find my part number, by machine serial number, on bobcatpartsonline.com and then do an extensive internet search. The part number for my 742B fuel sending unit Is 6568175. shop.bobcat.com wants $94.66 for it. I’m not sure if that comes with a gasket or not.
