642 bobcat

I just brought my 642 gas machine to the dealer because it was making some funky noises from the chain case.They opened it up and said the bull gear on one of the drive motor was bad and the chains were tired.Do both motor gears have to be changed? They also said I would need to buy seal kits for the motors at 700.00 big ones Their estimate was 4000.00 for the repairs to my 642 I just spent 4000 plus on the motor rebuild. Is 2900 in parts out of line? Would I be better off parting my machine out. The machine is real clean and seemed so close to being able to use it . Now I don't now weather to bail on my project. If i do ,I have alot of fresh parts for somebody.

Does it still drive well? as in power? if so, you don't need motor seal kits. If you do, they just run standard O rings unless the two high pressure ones are bad, then you will need $100 seal kits.
The gear they are talking about, i assume this is driving the chains? as there is a gearbox that the drive motors attach to.
I rekon you could get out of this much cheaper than 4K. Drop the chain case from the machine, roll it out and do your work. Roll it back and lower it back on.
Personally i would get prices on roller chain, you don't need OEM here, and ask the dealer how much the bad gear is. I'm willing to bet you can get out of this for a lot less than 4k if you are willing to do the work your self.

I'm definatly not afraid to do any of the work myself. The dealer said the motor might be leaking into the chain case. Seems to me a gasket would take care of this. Do you know where to get chains or should I just get on the internet? Do the cases crack? they said bobcat makes a plate to weld over the slight crack where the drive motor mounts. The crack was so small I could barely see it. Should i even bother welding it? Thanks for the info, I;m not trying to be a cheap skate but I also don't like somebody sticking it up my ass. Dean

If the motor is leaking into the chaincase it is a seal on the outside of the motor. Remove the motor, you will see a shaft, there should be a seal that seals the shaft that goes into the chain case..... Its pretty cheap from memory.
Roller chain should be available from just about any chain or wire rope shop. Even the net should have it. Make a few calls, see what prices they come up with.

Thanks Taza, The machine is to good to give up on .This forum has been great , I'm not the only one that's not a bobcat mechanic. I fully understand about overhead with business and most times you get what you pay for. The big problem with playing with these machines is that there isn't alot of shops that work on them , so you have to do the work yourself or pay up the ying yang.

Thanks Taza, The machine is to good to give up on .This forum has been great , I'm not the only one that's not a bobcat mechanic. I fully understand about overhead with business and most times you get what you pay for. The big problem with playing with these machines is that there isn't alot of shops that work on them , so you have to do the work yourself or pay up the ying yang.

If you need more help, look up my profile and sned me an email. I'll help out where i can. The job isn't that hard, its just a pain in the butt to gain access. That's why removing the chain case is a good option, you can do the axle seals and bearings with relative ease if you go that far. If you're doing the chains, its not a bad idea to do the seals and check the bearings for wear.
