What is the easiest way to recondition the mechanisms & tighten the latch system? Looks like you have to cut the plate to work on it.

Are you talking about the locking pins? I worked on a machine that the levers were stuck and i had to cut the metal plate to gain access.

There is an access plate on the rear of the bobtach that the mechanism can be serviced through. It is held in place by a single bolt.
They are a definite dirt / corrosion trap, so some heat may be required to get things apart.
