Thats a good start, use a small bottle of fuel then you know its not clogged.
To clear the lines you should be able to use compressed air or even if the lines are visable i would install new hose, its not expensive. The hardest part will be the puckup lines in the fuel tank.
Remove the pickup screen in the tank and install a inline filter where you can get to it b4 the lift pump.

I dont spose that I could just remove the screen altogether and let the fuel filter do its job? I might venture a guess that an inline would help get the bigger stuff out before it got the the filter though....???

Thats what I'd do is remove the screen and install the biggest inline filter you can. Easier to clean/replace the filter then the screen

The only issue you may have is the pickup screen sometimes has a one way valve in it to assist in holding prime and getting prime after running it out of fuel. If you don't mind these possible problems do as you thought, big inline filter and remove the pickup screen. I have had a machine without the one way valve and it worked just fine, held prime but priming was a bit of a pest. You had to remove the end to the pump and hold your finger on there to provide a little back pressure, without it the fuel would simply not pick up.
Once it has prime, and you have no leaks you are set.
