Could someone tell me how the sending unit for the fuel level works? Thank you

power comes thru the gauge and the sending unit is a variable resister that goes to ground. the differences is what electrical parameters the sending unit is to ground as that can change manf. to manf. ohm wise. so gauge and sending unit need to match.
