Engine questions, need advice

Help Support SkidSteer Forum:

I'm really interested to hear if the carb rebuild did the trick or not.
Although it seemed like the coil fixed my problem, it still shuts down after about 30 minutes running time. I did order a replacement gas cap too- the old one was not the right one.
I'm planning to open up the carb now too.
Very hot here today so later this afternoon I'm going to try running it a while to see how it does. I'm still skeptical about the carb as well, at least the rebuild shouldn't hurt anything and was probably overdue.
I'll let you know

Carb work looks like it did not help, still wants to stall after running and working for a while.
I've probably exhausted the things I can do skill/knowledge wise to trouble shoot this and am not sure what I'll do next, maybe I can get my mechanic to double check everything I've done an also do stuff like a compression test, etc
Still open for any ideas
Thanbks

This has been very interesting. We run a bunch of VH4D so I've learned a considerable amount about trouble shooting this problem from this thread. Here's my .02.........years ago we had these types of problems all the time......I switched all of our machines to electric fuel pumps and the problems stopped. Not just any pump, in our experience, will work however so if you're interested in trying that route let me know and I'll post part number. We mount the pump on the body to stay away from heat......we simply don't have the vapor lock/fuel delivery problems any more and we are running in southern Az in the middle of the summer. If you're like me you hate to just throw parts at problem so I understand if you pass.

I'll consider it, please post the pump and any details of where you mount it and how to wire it
Thanks

I like the electric fuel pump idea a lot. It's a bummer when you look at the transparent in-line fuel filter and it's only half full! It just seems like that thing ought to be full. It never is.
My only question about the electric pump is did you have any problems with it overcoming the float valve and flooding out?

It is a pump I get at NAPA part #P60504 about $60.00. It's a rotary pump rated at 2.5 PSI so no flooding problems (the VH4D calls for 2-3 PSI) It comes with a mounting bracket that has a single bolt.....I just made a bracket on the side wall of the machine coming off the upright and mount the pump there with rubber line to the carb (We run M-610s). Filter pre pump. I wire to the accessory terminal off the ignition (I'm no electrician). I've tried a number of pumps through the years.....most weren't worth a plug nickel but two worked well....one has been discontinued, this one is great. I've got 3 or 4 on machines that have literally run for 8-10 years....thousands of hours and still running.....I'd never have a manual pump on one of these machines again. I take the manual fuel pump gasket, make a cover out of 1/8th flat stock then use the old fuel pumps to throw at speeding neighborhood teenagers :)

going to give the pump a try this weekend, did you run the wire all the way to the ignition switch or were you able to find a hot source someplace closer?

I have a m600 with the pump mounted same way, pre pump clear filter, power on mine is ran all the way to the key. As soon as you turn it you can hear the pump kick on. I'm not sure if that is where they write theirs or not but it works for me.

Yes, I do run it to the switch and just ground directly to the bracket. Hope this works for you.....going to feel bad if it just costs you more $$$$.

Ran the machine today, almost 4 hours with no trouble, it was cool out and raining. Have a new fuel pump but did not get a chance to install it yet.
Rebuilt carb seems to be working well but it did backfire a couple of times upon turning it off, any idea what I should look for as a cause?

It could technically be a few things, running lean causing hot spots to detonate fuel without a spark. Sticking fuel shut off solenoid in the carb that plugs the main jet (assuming it has this style setup).
How did you shut it down? Throttle right back then key off? its good practice to throttle an engine back before shutting it off, i just need to get by dad to do this.....

No solenoid, I basically just throttled back and shut off. Been invesitaging a little and seems throttling back and letting idle for 30 seconds or so before shutting off could fix it
