While engine is out (been working on crankshaft) I thought to adress a problem that was occurring before I put everything back together. I experienced some grinding noise and machine would not turn over. I would have to try several times and sometimes it would turnover and start right up. Other times you had to put skid steer in service mode and that always fired it right up. Is it a starter or power issue?

That happens when teh bendix gear is not being pushed forward enough to engage the ring gear on the fly wheel. Sometimes it can be as simple as rust on the snout of the starter. Even a bit of oil can fix it. The gear should slide all the way forward without binding.

The starter drive ( bendix ) could be slipping. It is a one way clutch so when the diesel motor starts the electric starter motor does not spin to extreem speeds until you let go of the key. Another possibility is that the cranking signal between the key and starter is eratic and what you are hearing is the starter chattering. ____________________________________ The bell housing on this machine is wet, be sure to refill with lube and check on the stick between the pumps. Otherwise the pump drive gears will wear. My machine came to me apart and I don't know what type of lube to use so you will have to look in a manual.

Thank you for your response! I am getting back to this tonight. Is the bell housing using gear oil? Everything I am reading says 10w-30 oil for all other components. I can't seem the bell housing information.

The engine to transmission gearbox uses 80W-90 oil. The starter, while protruding in the bell housing is separated from the gearbox portion of the bell housing.
The chain case gearboxes also use 80W-90 oil. In the early units the oil level was checked at plugs located by your heels when you sit in the loader. In those units the chain case oil was 10W-30.
In the later units the chain case gearbox is lubricated by chain case oil, which in those units is 80W-90.
