Hey there.
Check the end of the gland nut to see if it has 2 holes, about 1/4" diameter. If its that style, it will be screwed in. You will find it is standard left hand thread, the ends can some times rust a bit making them really tight. You also have to tighten them up a lot to get them to seal some times.
What i do, i get a length of bar and put it through the mounting hole on the tip of the cylinder to hold it down, i get someone to stand on it. I then get a large wrench (we call them stilsons here) and haul on the gland nut to get it to crack. Be careful of the chrome bar, if you slip while pulling on the wrench, you can slip and hit the chrome bar. Cover it with a news paper or 2 (a full news paper that is).
You may even need a pipe on the wrench to get it to crack. Give it a go, if you have any more problems just give me a yell. Once you have that off, the seals are a snap to replace.
Good luck!

I you can, leave the barrel of the cylinder attached to the loader to hold it for you. While pulling on the wrench have someon rap on the cylinder barrel around the outside of the end plug in the thread area with reasonable force while aplying torque to the end plug. I believe Taz meant they will losen when turned in a counter clock wise dirrection looking from the rod end of the cylinder. Have never seen any cylinder that turned the other way to come apart Regards Ken

righty tighty lefty loosie ;-)
hehehe, thats the one!
Ken - yeah, still left hand, but using the bar to hold it down. Like you said, you can keep it attached to the loader if you can still gain access. Good point about hiting around the thread.

Lets not confuse the issue here guys, in Engineering terms the end cap has a Right Hand Thread.

Don't know how you can bend that but sh;t happens. Does your hoe have the top hooks, besides the bobtach quick attach? I would also call your local machine shops. We have one here that keep hardened chrome shaft in stock and they can make up new rams, threaded for your piston and weld the eye back on the end for @ $200.00 So if the bobcat part is too spendy I'd check that avenue Is the plug ruined or just scratched up? Good luck. Ken

thanks for the info
Your hoe would not bend the rod, when its in use its fully retracted. You bend rods by having your bobtach rite down and twisting it past where it should be. My old 731 had a ram stick that seriously looked like a bannana.

If you have the gear, you can make a new one pretty easily. Check the gland nut for wear, if it has worn egg shape you really have to make or buy a new one. If its worn, it will just eat seals.

Mine isnt bent quite that bad....it does have a little wear where it hooks to the bobtach.

Does you bobtach have the stops (contacts the very bottom of boom on each side) it is supposed to hit those when you tilt cyl is at the end of its stroke. Maybey if these a missing the middle of the ram was pushed up by contacting the bobtach??? Just a guess. Is it bend to the side, up, down? If its the stops, could happen again!! Regards Ken
