I been away for a while as I been without electricity at home for over two weeks from hurricane Gustav bending the power poll and pulling the service off the side the house , lucky for me my fiance's house was ok so I had a place to stay but no internet , got right back to work and the storm chaser where here till Ike hit and most took off for South west La. and Texas as the damages hear where not so bad -------what I want to tell you'll about is the upside down pyraimd of hurricane clean up pay , and why chasing storms to me is a waste of time for the non connected people , every Parish ( we don't have counties here ) has different pay but very similiar , 11 dollars a cubic yard is given if you supply a truck , driver , machine to load , operator and two flag man ,that's 4 people to pay , one flag man in fount the machine and one in back the machine , to just haul is 8 dollars and to just load is 3 dollars , that is the highet pay , in one Parish it's 6 dollars to load and haul , most locals have given up doing it so out of towners come it and take the job , here is the real kicker , the contractor that has the contract to clean up is owned by a former top ranking goverment offical , they own no equipment , no trucks and no operators or drivers , all they do is sit at the dump and keep track of how many yards is in each truck that dumps and get paid by how many yards are dumped , from what we gather they are making 39 dollars a cubic yard to keep track of how much trash is collected , seems that sometimes the work is subed down to another contractor at a leasser price and they sub it out again to others , what a waste of money , top the pyramid make 400 percent more than the people who actually do the job

I imagine an independent going to his local university and finding an aspiring journalism student to accompany him on a chase to create an expose' on the the corruption you have described.........=)
On second thought, there are too many ways an "accident" could occur.......=(.
That's pure BS, Is it worth to talk to a local government official about the abuse? or, you could talk to a lawyer about options.

I read the post a few times and don't get it -----------From what I gather nothing was done out the line of whats legal , they are playing by the rules in place , the contracts where given out by the state , the problem I see is the rules of giving out the contracts and what is paid needs to be changed , it don't seem fair for a contractor not doing any work to get paid more than the job is worth to start with , and they got the contract because they were politically connected , I guess it's a case or who you know and not what you do , and tax payers are footing the bill , goverment waste
Fish, there are some low life independent contractors out there that take avantage of folks in destress. That's probably the reason for the checks and balances. Those kind make us all look bad.

Not to blame anyone for takeing work when needed, but people will take advantage if there is somone to do the work. The way to cure that is to say unless we get this much i guess you get your shovel and you do the work yourself. I am sure there is a time frame for contract. Only bad thing is some poor people have to wait on clean-up because some low life wants to get rich off of other people's back. Time to stop the rant. Good luck in the future and hope all is well!
