Sounds like you have a bad connection or broken wire and the changing that part made a connection for awhile, I would pull the mounting screws and turn the key on and wiggle each wire going into the connectors and try to keep an eye on the lights to see if you can get it to duplicate that.
I think it has been said before never use a test light with circuit boards as you can sometimes short them out.
