rebuild on N844T turbo diesel

Help Support SkidSteer Forum:

No sleeves on that engine. If the bores are damaged beyond spec they can be sleeved with a repair sleeve. Depending on the condition I have done several that didn't need any cylinder work. OEM parts are very pricey.

frogfarmer; Thanks for the information. I found a rebuild kit for the motor for 900.00. I don't think that is to bad. If it's the turbo is bad it will also cost about 900.00 for new one or 350.00 to have it rebuilt. You wouldnt be in Ohio by chance? With parts supplied by me and the motor out of the loader what do you think is fair price to pay for the labor to rebuild this motor?

Sorry not even close to Ohio. 900 for a complete kit is way too cheap. Pistons and rings are in the 800 range. The oil pump will be another 250. Rods and mains 100. Gaskets 250. If you need rods they are about 100 a piece. The crank if needed and I would not grind one of these cranks is 1000-1500 depending on what you can find. This does not include any governor or cam parts. Also the injection system is costly. Not uncommon for the injectors to be out of spec and about 70 a pc for them. If it contaminated the oil cooler they are 250.
With all that said I am not trying to discourage you from repairing your engine but to do it right is very expensive.
Labor isnt terible and for a guess would be 8-10hrs so 500-750 would be in the ball park. If someone were to bring me an engine and chinese parts I would tell them upfront and have them sign that all warranty is null and void. The chinese parts for these engines are not OEM quality. Many parts can be sourced from Perkins but the N844 is licenced to New Holland so some of what you need will be New Holland only.
Hope that helps. Remans are only $4500 plus tax and shipping. If the machine wont be worth the price of a reman it might be scrap.

frogfarmer: Thanks again for your input. Sounds like reman. would be the way to go in the event that i find the motor is beat. Is it plausible that the smoking is the result of a bad turbo? Iwas driving a semi once and the turbo went bad and it was sucking the oil out of the crank case and it smoked like no tomorrow. Also there is oil leaking at the manifold near the turbo. If i have to i know i can part this loader out for what i have in it (1500) or put a reman. in it and still be under what a machine like this is selling for. I plan to fix it up with some paint and such. I like to tinker with stuff like this so it will fun for me.

Frogfarmer; does the serial number give any clue as to exactly what year the loader is? New Holland lx665 turbos were manufatured between 1994 and 1999. The serial # is 67372. Thanks

Turbos do go bad and excessive smoke and oil comsumption would be a symptom. Oil leaking at the manifold could be the gasket. The gasket is just an Oring and they tend to get hard and leak. If its the turbo it will likely have play in the shaft and excessive oil residue in the rubber hoses that connect the turbo to the manifold. I have seen several of these burn the pistons and lock the rings causing oil consumption. It seems they tend to run a little warm. If the motor is strong on all 4 cylinders and doesnt have a knock it is very likely you could repair it for reasonable money given what you have invested. I would buy these all day long for $1500 running even if they do smoke. If its just a toy and not likely to see hard everyday use the inexpensive chinese parts may work very well for the money.

I got the loader just for pefrsonal use snow removal, spreadi,g stone, mulch and general yard work. I'm hopeing that its aturbo thats bad and i can rebuild it or buy another one. I saw another post on here where a guy is doing a repower on the same loader i have and he's using a yanmar diesel. I be following his progress and consider that as a possible option. Thanks for all your help.

Good luck with your machine and I hope its not something major. If its the turbo and pouring oil into the intake it could be starving the rest of the engine for oil. I would take a look at the input from the air cleaner and output to the manifold on the turbo and see if it shows signs of a leak or play in the shaft. I have considered repowers before but couldnt come up with anything cost efffective.

Frogfarmer, have you ever known anyone with a bad turbo to just eliminate it and run it naturally aspirated like the ls160 ? You would lose 10 horsepower but would you have to change intake manifolds and other stuff? Just curious.

I havent known of anyone to do it but I dont think there would be any problems. Only engine differnece I know of is the injection timing. Timing is set with shims so that would be an easy change. Intake should be the same with or without turbo. Exhaust would need a little work to get the outlet in the right location but again easy fix. I have had these engines running with the turbo removed when going to test an unknown motor of questionable condition. They seem to run fine without the turbo but have no idea what a long term test would result. Due to the way the rocker shaft gets oil it would take a new line to feed it oil and an OEM part would likely be your only choice. With all that said I wouldnt want to give up any HP on these machines. They are a little weak in my opinion from the factory. Let us know if you give it a try.

Thanks, not going to try it though. Mine runs good now as long as I can get fuel into it.
