I have just bought a mess. With help from on here I found out it is an M-600 with a Wisconsin VH4D engine. Right now he has a galvanized 2-1/2" pipe adaptor screwed into the exhaust manifold and a loud straight pipe going straight up. If I ever get it all back to somewhat like a machine should be, I need to use it in town for about a week. So that is my question, what is the quietest muffler I can put on this Wisconsin engine? Would a car muffler work or is that to much back pressure for this engine? I'll probably keep the exhaust going straight up.

The M-600 came original with the VF4D…….did someone repower it with the VH4D? Either way…..I use the NAPA muffler pt#22769. I weld gussets to either side of the neck to give it support or it will break after not too many hours.

Well here again I found part of the engine tag at the back of the book that came with the machine, not on the engine. But I know now from the serial # that it is the wrong book, it's for a 610 not a 600 like I have. Is there a way to find out which engine this is for sure? I just spent about 15 minutes crawling around and under looking for any thing that would tell me for sure what it is. Found nothing. So is there a way to tell the difference? Again, thanks for all the help in advance!!

Easiest way for me is to pop off the distributor cap……it the rotor has a long "T" shaped blade (maybe 1 1/2 inch), it is a VF4D, where as the VH4D will have no long blade at all for contact. Or….look on the distributor cam (below the rotor)……the VH4D will have lobes at an even 90 degrees, where as the VF4D will have uneven lobes at 90-135-90-45 degrees. The muffler, as well as many other parts of the two engines are interchangeable ….. some major components are not.

Well the Good news is that the engine really is the VH4D!! Now I can be sure when ordering parts for that too. Is that a better engine? Newer? Or just a replacement for the older one?

Newer and better in my view. The VH4D, when done right is a very reliable engine. The VF4D is a 25 HP engine while the VH4D is 30 HP. Parts are readily available for both.

Thanks For Your Help!! It does seem to run really well but I don't have the muffler on it yet or a decent air filter system, has a few oil leaks that I have to get to yet. 30 HP I guess would do the machine OK, but my Harley has almost twice that much. I have fixed a bunch of things on this machine already and still have about two hundred more things to go. But despite all the DUMB things the previous owner did, I think it will turn out to be a good machine. Again, Thanks for helping me out!!
