I have resurrected an OMC 330, same machine as a John Deere 70 skid steer, center twist stick drive control, hydrostat unit. I have noticed that when I start to move the stick forward or backward, there is an effect like gear grinding. It is kind of like trying to put a transmission into gear without disengaging the clutch, and I can feel it in the stick and hear it just like grinding gears on a manual car or truck transmission. Does anyone know if that is normal, or if it is not normal, what problem it may indicate?

Is it low in hyd oil, that can cause vibration & a grinding noise. also change the hyd filter check it for metal filings. u could also remove the side covers & inspect the chaincases make sure they have oil in them for lubrication.
